What is DonkeyCMS?

DonkeyCMS is a self-hosted blogging engine designed for websites not operating on WordPress, supporting environments built with hand-coded Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap, commercial site templates, or artificial intelligence (AI)-generated codebases. The software installs into a /blog subdirectory on standard PHP and MySQL hosting environments and inherits the primary website's navigation menus, footer structure, and styling across all published posts.

How it works

  • The Frame Setup utility scans the parent website's header navigation and footer markup to apply them across the blog interface, while Frame Studio allows administrators to customize layout elements after installation.
  • The platform deploys via a web-based graphical installer using an included license key and executes system updates with automated backups prior to installation.
  • The system requires PHP version 8.1 or later and a MySQL database, operating without dependencies on Node.js, third-party plugins, or theme frameworks.

Key features

  • Rich text editor with a Markdown editing mode, taxonomy management (categories and tags), featured image assignment, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) blocks, and scheduled post publishing.
  • Built-in search engine optimization (SEO) and machine-readability tools, including Article, FAQPage, and BreadcrumbList structured data schemas, canonical URL tags, an Extensible Markup Language (XML) sitemap, and a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed.
  • An integrated Image Optimizer that converts image uploads to the WebP format and strips embedded Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) camera metadata, including geolocation coordinates. Typography is self-hosted locally without outbound requests to Google Fonts.
  • Complete backup and restoration utilities for database posts, configuration settings, and uploaded files. Commercial tiers support remote cloud backup integration with Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, and Google Drive.
  • An administrative control panel available in seven languages, with frontend blog templates supporting complete internationalization and customizable interface strings.

Plans

A perpetual Free tier provides foundational blogging functionality. The Pro tier adds a dedicated Media Library, reader comment management, multi-user team access, and a WordPress content migration tool. The Business tier incorporates analytics reporting, newsletter registration forms, and an editorial team task board. The Agency tier provides white-label branding options for service providers deploying instances across client properties.

Performance

According to vendor benchmark testing conducted in October 2026, a production DonkeyCMS blog post achieved performance scores of 100 on desktop and 91 on mobile within Google PageSpeed Insights.
