Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have deployed Extreme Wireless Access Points across our whole business environment for the sole purpose of providing a wireless Internet connection. We have also deployed some of Extreme Wireless Access Points outdoors in a few selected locations. These wireless access points also allow us to segment our network on the WLAN.

Pros

  • The hardware and firmware are both reliable.
  • Extreme Wireless Access Points has some variety to the type of WAP's they offer.
  • The management interface they report back to offers good basic information that is easy to find.

Cons

  • We use WiNG still for our WAP's, which is ok to do administrative tasks from, but it could be better. However, Extreme Wireless Access Points is moving everything to CloudIQ, which is better in every way and something we plan to move to soon.
  • The logo on the access points makes you want to mount the AP's sideways like a diamond because otherwise the logo looks crooked, and that just looks bad, so you have to take extra time sometimes, depending on the mount, to get the AP to look square.

Likelihood to Recommend

Extreme's products are meant for the enterprise and small to medium-sized businesses. If you have really basic networking needs, such as needing only 1 SSID for a few employees like a mom and pop shop, then Extreme Wireless Access Points is an over priced option for your needs.

Extreme Wireless Access Points Networks WiFi

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Managed Wi-Fi for our Washington DC headquarters. Have a 20,000 square foot office space on a single floor. The heat zone mapping functionality enabled us to set up the system using the minimum of access points, leaving no dead spots at all on the floor (despite the elevator shafts centrally located).

The cloud management console allows me to keep track of client machines on the networks and to change the password remotely if needed.

Pros

  • Heat Mapping
  • Multiple SSID creation/management
  • remote cloud management

Cons

  • Built in help could be easier to acces
  • licensing could be explained better

Likelihood to Recommend

Works well for complex site layouts, as you can preplan the locations on a virtual heat map before placing the APs. Works well for single sites, haven't tried working on multiple sites, but that does seem a little over complex to me. Simple interface for setting up SSIDs so not too much technical expertise required. Little more complex if you want to custom brand a splash page for guest access though.

Access points for high density environments with no performance loss.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In our company regional, our entire data network infrastructure is Extreme containing POE switches and wifi access points. We manage this equipment through the cloud software that the manufacturer sold us. The extreme access points have been in use for almost two years and are model 250 Wifi 5 - 802.11ac wave 2. This solution is excellent, and we are very pleased to meet all our internet connection and access requirements. The main issue with this purchase was resolving internet slowness and connection security issues through Radius 802.1x authentication and guest portal.

Pros

  • Allows simultaneous access of more than 200 people per access point.
  • It has great design and signal capture and send enhancement features.
  • Authenticated access on the Radius server for employees.
  • Access with registration portal for guests.
  • Warranty with quick parts replacement.

Cons

  • The hotspot equipment is not upgradeable to Wifi 6. You need to buy the new model.
  • 24x7 warranty is much more expensive.

Likelihood to Recommend

The Extreme access point solution has been used in the cooperative scenario with VLANs for employees in access through 802.1x authentication and also for guests through the captive portal that allows access of people for a limited time and prior registration. The equipment has great performance and connection speed and supports a high density of users connected at the same time without lag and crashes. The management of this equipment is being carried out through software with cloud management and is accessed by our infrastructure team to configure and monitor alerts.

Is ExtremeWireless worth the cost?

Rating: 6 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We utilize ExtremeWireless in our district for our Wireless Access Point solution. These devices are cloud-managed, which was inherited by Aerohive (Extreme bought them out). Very configurable based on what your needs are - these devices can support up to 200 devices per SSID, and every setting imaginable can be tweaked - such as individual Radio profiles on a per AP basis.

Pros

  • Cloud-managed
  • Fine-tuning settings on a per-device basis
  • Quick deployment
  • Heatmaps that allow for placement of APs on uploaded building maps

Cons

  • In my experience, licensing has become a nightmare. Licensing must be tied to a device, they also won't let you activate used units from other companies if they are donated or purchased third-party.
  • Customer service is outsourced overseas.
  • In my experience, technicians are incentivized to close tickets quickly - whether the issue has been fixed or not - which can be frustrating to work with.

Likelihood to Recommend

The actual hardware works great, but with recent changes within the company, I'm less inclined to be a loyal customer of theirs long-term. Their changes to licensing agreements are quite a deterrent and make for a frustrating situation for the end-user as well as the reseller. I would steer smaller businesses away from ExtremeWireless, as their pricing is quite high compared to other companies. Mid to large-sized businesses would benefit from Extreme's line of products - so long as you can tolerate the licensing hoops one must jump through to remain compliant.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

use both AP and switches when the price point sensitive builds. We use this when the hire price sku items are out of reach and can provide a solution that will meet the needs. This also meets the needs to be cloud managed

Pros

  • autopilot replacement
  • easy to setup
  • tempates for quick deployments

Cons

  • their locking out of the portal when license count needs true up
  • the fix for the LED's that burns out, not just switching it to a blink mode

Likelihood to Recommend

These devices are cloud managed and great price point when the client has a tight budget and needs a solution. A must is to pay the extra for autopilot

Aerohive-Needs work

Rating: 7 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

The Aerohive Wireless wifi solution was implemented at our corporate office, along with customers we support. It addressed the issue of centralized management of a wifi solution, and one of the first to provide such service in the industry. We have since replaced it at our corporate office with another solution, but it was a good starting point learning this type of technology.

Pros

  • The web portal is easy to maneuver
  • It took a bit to understand the flow of setting up a new client or site

Cons

  • The web portal could use a facelift and be more streamlined like the Meraki portal.
  • Communication with the APS- specifically applying firmware upgrades. That process was extremely buggy, and many times I had to get to the AP and factory default it because it would get stuck in the upgrade process and not complete the cycle. That was very inconvenient for places such as University halls where the AP was mounted 20+ feet on the ceiling and having the rent a lift to reset the AP.

Likelihood to Recommend

Aerohive Wireless has a great selection of APs for indoor and outdoor deployments, which now compete with other vendors. With this said, they should work in the environment you install them, with the plus of using a web portal to manage the solution. They are questionable in areas that will be hard to access if you need to factory default them.

Aerohive is a great solution with great cost but with some drawbacks.

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Aerohive APs throughout our warehouses to support our distribution as well as supply chain. It addresses all issues with connecting the thousands of device that relies on our APs to communicate and connect to our core infrastructure services.

Pros

  • Ease of use and Management. The process of implementing APs is straight forward and managing the wireless infrastructure is quite simple and efficient.
  • Coverage: we are very happy with the distance each AP coverages in our warehouses without having any drop issues or over implementing APs.
  • Cost competitive versus other cloud managed wi-fi solutions such as Cisco, Aruba or Mist.

Cons

  • A mobile app would be great to manage the Infrastructure.
  • The browser load time is quite long sometimes making troubleshooting slow.
  • Better integration with Windows cloud services for management and authentication.

Likelihood to Recommend

It's well suited for manufacturing and warehouses with ease of deployment, management, and support. It’s great for offices and remote offices and stores. I can’t think of a scenario where Aerohive is not suited or appropriate. I would say not for home use, as it’s an expensive product for such a case.

Aerohive is a cost effective centralized management solution for Wifi

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Aerohive is used across multiple companies and at multiple locations in our infrastructure. Each Aerohive broadcasts multiple SSIDs each with its own individual VLAN and integrates with Windows Network Policy Server to utilize AD security groups to define specific users to specific VLANs.

Wireless connections are shared between the Aerohive Access Points, so users moving between APs are not required to manually reconnect.

Pros

  • Access points can broadcast multiple SSIDs and place traffic for each SSID in the same or different VLANs.
  • Access Points are able to receive and interpret attributes passed from a RADIUS server. Then use this information to assign different VLANs in the same SSID.
  • Cloud dashboard can track all connected wifi users, devices, and show statistics related to the access points.
  • Access Points auto connect to the cloud dashboard after acquiring a DHCP IP address. Making initial setup very simple.
  • Can require users to agree to an Acceptable Use Policy to utilize a guest wifi SSID.

Cons

  • Dashboard constantly says that the AP configuration is not in sync with management, but no changes have been made.
  • "Golden Age" software updates have caused APs to overheat and crash.
  • Renewing the support contract was a lengthy process that could have been easily simplified and streamlined.
  • Customer support did not want to help me with resolving an issue. They just wanted to close the case and tell me that it was not an issue with their equipment.
  • Documentation is severely lacking for configuring some of the advanced features offered.

Likelihood to Recommend

Aerohive is useful for hosting multiple SSIDs and have them each segregated into their own VLANs. The ability to segregate and force Guest users to agree to an Acceptable Use Policy. Since the Access Points can communicate with RADIUS (or NPS); you can run WPA2-Enterprise, force employees to use AD credentials to authenticate, and gain the AD password policy (i.e. password changes every 30/60/90 days.)

Aerohive is Amazing!

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Aerohive has been deployed within 2 of our many divisions within the company. We have found the Aerohive product to be far more robust than Ruckus, or Aruba in providing ease of access, policy creation, and overall management. We also use a lot of wireless scanner guns, which makes wireless more than just a critical device... we live or die by our wireless connectivity.

Aerohive Devices rarely have to be set up manually, so interference is minimal... even on the 2.4 gigahertz spectrum. This makes my life as an engineer much easier as I don't have to change things that don't need to be changed..

Pros

  • Ease of deployment - Setting up an AP is easy as powering it on, the controller finds it. Apply a policy, and move forward with your day.
  • Ease of management - Policy updates and firmware updates are point and click
  • Amazing Radios - Signal strength is unparalelled for enterprise wireless environments.

Cons

  • More visibility into your product certification process. - Certifications are a great way to show employers you're serious about the products they have. Not all of us have the means to go to a class just to take your test. Ruckus provides this much easier than aerohive, free online training, and 60 bucks for a test.
  • Account execs need to be more engaged, resellers provide better turn around than aerohive account reps.
  • Add task templates, or at least make them easier to access if they're available.

Likelihood to Recommend

Aerohive works amazingly well in warehouses and offices. I have not tried it outside as of yet.

Aerohive Wireless: It just works!

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Aerohive wireless to provide solid wi-fi across the organization, including one central office, two warehouses, and multiple small office/home office installations. With this latest generation of wi-fi tech, we now have visibility into wi-fi and switching across the entire organization, and remote troubleshooting and resolution of most issues is now a reality rather than a hypothetical.

Pros

  • If your subscription lapses, the AP's don't stop functioning (I'm looking at you, Meraki).
  • The "hive" architecture that is the backbone of the Aerohive platform: the cloud is just configuration management and reporting, the "controller" is a mesh network that auto-configures itself on your layer 2 network
  • Auto-provisioning is exactly what the doctor ordered: scan the barcode on several unopened boxes of AP's into the cloud interface, ship them off, plug them in at the remote site, wait ten minutes, BLAMMO. Incredible wi-fi with no muss, no fuss.

Cons

  • Splintering of the HiveManagers: Right now, there are two HiveManagers: HiveManager NG and HiveManager Classic - Certain products are only compatible with HiveManager NG (such as the 8-port fanless switches we would like to use), but HiveManager NG doesn't support routers (which we have)

Likelihood to Recommend

Aerohive is well-suited for just about any indoors wireless environment with a mission-critical need for wireless. The gear is pretty good, the cloud control is great, and the support is top-notch. If you only need one or two AP's to meet your needs, Aerohive might not be your golden ticket, but once you need 2-3 AP's in range of one another, you're going to need Aerohive in your life.
