Overall Satisfaction with ExtremeWireless

We utilize ExtremeWireless in our district for our Wireless Access Point solution. These devices are cloud-managed, which was inherited by Aerohive (Extreme bought them out). Very configurable based on what your needs are - these devices can support up to 200 devices per SSID, and every setting imaginable can be tweaked - such as individual Radio profiles on a per AP basis.
  • Cloud-managed
  • Fine-tuning settings on a per-device basis
  • Quick deployment
  • Heatmaps that allow for placement of APs on uploaded building maps
  • In my experience, licensing has become a nightmare. Licensing must be tied to a device, they also won't let you activate used units from other companies if they are donated or purchased third-party.
  • Customer service is outsourced overseas.
  • In my experience, technicians are incentivized to close tickets quickly - whether the issue has been fixed or not - which can be frustrating to work with.
  • Cloud-managed
  • Reliability/uptime
  • Speed Of deployment
  • RMA turnaround Is next-day
  • Uptime in a school setting is incredibly important. We have never had downtime due to ExtremeWireless having a loss of services.
  • The ability to run a BYOD/Guest wireless on the same hardware with separate VLANs helps us support students who bring their own devices to school.
  • These devices are quite expensive though, coming in at about $1000 per AP510c. And that's if you can order them with their supply shortages right now.
We are running Ubiquiti APs for a separate network need in one of our buildings - which we are also happy with. But the difference between Ubiquiti and ExtremeWireless is vast - I cannot find most of the settings I'm used to seeing with ExtremeWireless in the Ubiquiti GUI. That said - you pay for what you get. ExtremeWireless is about 5x the cost per AP than Ubiquiti is. The reliability of uptime with the hardware, as well as the cloud service from ExtremeWireless, has been fantastic to utilize.

Do you think Extreme Wireless Access Points delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Extreme Wireless Access Points's feature set?

Yes

Did Extreme Wireless Access Points live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of Extreme Wireless Access Points go as expected?

No

Would you buy Extreme Wireless Access Points again?

Yes

The actual hardware works great, but with recent changes within the company, I'm less inclined to be a loyal customer of theirs long-term. Their changes to licensing agreements are quite a deterrent and make for a frustrating situation for the end-user as well as the reseller. I would steer smaller businesses away from ExtremeWireless, as their pricing is quite high compared to other companies. Mid to large-sized businesses would benefit from Extreme's line of products - so long as you can tolerate the licensing hoops one must jump through to remain compliant.
