What is Fivetran?

Fivetran replicates applications, databases, events and files into a high-performance data warehouse, after a five minute setup. The vendor says their standardized cloud pipelines are fully managed and zero-maintenance.

The vendor says Fivetran began with a realization: For modern companies using cloud-based software and storage, traditional ETL tools badly underperformed, and the complicated configurations they required often led to project failures. To streamline and accelerate analytics projects, Fivetran developed zero-configuration, zero-maintenance pipelines to deliver data into modern cloud warehouses.

Shaped by the real-world needs of data analysts and business intelligence users, Fivetran technology promises to enable organizations to control their data without complex engineering and ultimately supports data-backed decisions and company culture.

A great way to offload engineering work so you can get back to your core business

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Census to sync data to our external SAAS tools. This offloads a lot of data/analytics engineering work to Census and we can focus more on modelling business logic and maintaining our data warehouse. We love having all the integrations in one place and can be pretty confident when we use a new popular tool Census either has or can build us an integration.

Pros

  • Integrated with a lot of the popular tools out there
  • Can be set up easily
  • Great support

Cons

  • Sometimes a custom setup is very clunky, this was the case with our Intercom segment setup
  • There have been unexpected syncing failures before with vague error messaging.
  • We had issues previously with trying to rename schemas, Census still tried to use the old names.

Return on Investment

  • We are able to respond to customers account health more rapidly by syncing our data into the various customer account management tools

Usability

Automating the data extraction and loading part with ease

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We want to load data from various operational systems into our central data warehouse. Fivetran supports this task with minimal setup and maintenance effort on our side. This allows us to focus on the value adding tasks instead of on moving data between systems. We use Fivetran to sync data from CRM, Marketing Automation, ERP, HR, Subscription Management and Billing, and Support systems.

Pros

  • Small initial setup effort
  • Fivetran automatically takes care to fix loading issues
  • Has connectors to many different systems

Cons

  • Very difficult to get connectors enhanced if a specific needed object is not supported by them
  • Depending on the edition needed and the data volumes, can get quite expensive

Return on Investment

  • Saved a lot of manual development days (unable to quantify)
  • Accelerated the time to add a new source to the data warehouse a lot
