InfoSphere Information Server is used primarily as a corporate data integration platform. It allows to integrate data from several different commercial and industrial systems. It is a cross-departamental integration platform for extracting, transforming and loading data.
  • Any source to any target support.
  • ETL flexibility without coding.
  • Extreme data volume processing.
  • Native integration with other Data integration functionalities such as data profiling, data cleansing, metadata management.
  • Lack of a strong web development environment.
  • Metadata propagation in Jobs is somewhat complex.
  • The possibility to develop jobs in Parallel and/or Server Engines is confusing.
Information Server is extremely useful to replace manual developments that require a lot of coding effort. It significantly increases the productivity of the initial development and the future maintenance of the processes since it has a visual development environment with self-documentation.

We have used DataStage for many years to be able to create the integrations for the loading of the DW or migrations in different companies of different industries
  • It is very strong to make transformations/data derivations
  • It is very easy to connect to various external data sources. It has an interface (stages) for each connection that simplifies the task
  • It is a stable platform. And that parallelism helps make it fast for loading, if the process is well designed
  • Schedule of the processes
  • Process versioning
  • Deploy of versioned processes between environments. Revision of previous versions
Well suited:
  • Handling large amounts of data
  • Complex processes that require high levels of transformation
  • Connections to different data sources
Less appropriate
  • To use it as a workflow for execution of stored procedures
  • For file manipulation

We use infosphere for
1-Load Data Warehouse: I design ETL jobs for load data to our ODS, DWH and DM tables
2-Design DWH with Data Architect: I use data architect for creating DWH and DM tables. Create diagrams for business flow, table relationships etc.
3-Analysis to OLTP with Information Analyser: I use IA to check our OLTP system.
4-Information Governance Catalog: see the big picture of business and infostructure. We use IGC as a data dictionary, data lineage, and business lineage tool.
  • IIS best for ETL ,not ELT , and many and diffrent source systems.
  • It also can process big data , unstuctured data
  • It is not only DWH , you can use infosphere for analys and see the bigger architecture of your OLTP systems
  • Infosphere may improve its logging system. If you dont familier logs of infosphere it's little bit hard to understand
You can use infosphere:
-If you have multiple targets and source systems and they are different than each other.
-If your infostructure is so big and unplaned well so you can't find what you want to see.
-If your databases not so strong to process your data

InfoSphere Information Server is used primarily as a corporate data integration platform. It allows not only integrate data from different systems but also analyzes the quality of the data and improve it. Additionally, it allows managing metadata from end to end allowing a general overview of the data integration environment. Regarding the use cases, it is a cross-industry integration platform covering the need for data movement, improvement of data quality, metadata management of any integration project.
  • ETL capabilities, integrating data from any source system to any destination.
  • MPP Processing Engine
  • Data Profiling & Data Cleansing capabilities with multi-country support for common data such as names and addresses
  • Metatada management capabilities not only within the platform but also with 3er party tools like BI tools
  • I would be nice to have a new web development environment for DataStage.
  • Connectivity Packs such as Pack for SAP Application are a little pricey.
  • It is confusing for new developers the possibility of developing jobs using different execution engines such as Parallel or Server.
It can contribute a lot of value to any project that requires data integration either in batch or near real-time mode. You can manage the quality of the data as they are moved from a data source to the various destinations. It also allows managing the metadata of the entire environment and is especially useful to cover the requirements of a data governance program.

Maybe it is not the most appropriate platform to integrate data in real-time mode.

IBM InfoSphere is being used across the whole organization. The problem it addresses: DW/BI.
  • ETL
  • Parallel processing
  • Address verification using QualityStage
  • Single view of inormation
  • Parellel processing architecture
  • Big Data
  • Processing of XML
  • IBM InfoSphere is great for large/complex implementations. If your implementation is small, do not bother about using this product due to its complexity and licensing cost.
  • Do you want to see a single view of information across enterprise- use this product.
