IBM Sterling - A Business Toy for Gamers??

It is used across the entire organization for inbound, outbound, inventory control, supply chain management, returns, Cognos reporting, and more.
  • Centralizing data.
  • Instantaneously updated data.
  • Ad hoc reporting.
  • The user interface of the system is very "click" intensive. By that I mean that a user must either [mouse click] or [keyboard stroke] an inordinate amount, in order to accomplish a routine task. I contend that the user interface must have been developed by a "gamer" and not a business software development-type individual. This is very inefficient.
  • While the system is very capable of creating ad hoc reports (downloading data and importing into Excel), it is weak in the other direction. I would like to be able to manipulate / annotate my downloaded data and upload it back to the system in a batch process fashion. This would increase efficiency and reduce some of the aforementioned gamer-like clicking. Perhaps the system is capable of this and our organization is just not taking advantage of such features.
  • Recently, I spent a significant amount of time inputting data, in order to "trick" the system into providing the desired result. For example, the quantity of a specific product / SKU will display a result of [ 0 ], while most of the time no entry will be displayed if in fact the actual quantity is zero. The "trick" is this; Step 1 - Increase the value by [ 1 ], then [save]. Step 2 - Decrease the value by [ 1 ], then [save]. The system will now display the desired result. Wow!
I would be interested to know how much is out-of-the-box and how much customization a specific organization's requirement would be.

IBM Sterling Order Management provides order orchestration through a centralized inventory, order promising and fulfillment hub to support omni-channel fulfillment. It helps enterprises increase fill rates and inventory turns, reduce markdowns, improve customer loyalty and increase share of wallet. The Sterling Order Management system enables you to make better decisions about how to promise and fulfill customer orders, resulting in improved profitability and customer satisfaction.
  • A single view of supply and demand across channels to provide improved inventory utilization and more accurate promise dates.
  • Coordinated, customized fulfillment execution to support various selling channels and both internal and external supplies.
  • One source of order information to provide customers with accurate and timely alerts and updates.
  • Better if they can support Warehouse management. It would be single tool to have E2E support.
[IBM Sterling Order Management is well suited for] Integrated order fulfillment processes across all selling channels to provide a seamless customer fulfillment experience.

Its used across all departments & geos in my organization. The biggest problem it address is across Global Inventory Management & Revenue recognition like Transfer IN & OUT.
Also its capability with other applications.
  • The robust functionality of Sterling Order Management can be utilized across multiple selling channels, which include contact (call) center, store, web, and field sales
  • Check inventory availability across all locations
  • Sterling Distributed Order Management delivers the required visibility and event management across all fulfillment activity, allowing you to respond quickly to unexpected problems and meet customer expectations
  • Although not yet fully integrated, Sterling has a compelling Supply Chain Execution fulfillment vision that covers Selling, Order Management and Logistics.
  • IBM Sterling Commerce has been unable to generate significant sales momentum with their Warehouse Management System and Transportation Management System suites and is falling behind the competition. It is yet to be seen if IBM can turn this around and start to keep pace with the industry leaders
  • Sterling Warehouse Management Software depth and breadth of functionality is challenged in complex supply chain operations
  • Sterling Transportation Management Software is largely North American centric; lacking features to handle sophisticated global operations
What is the Development Technology ? What is the Integration Technology ? How much it can be Customized ?
