IBM Instana in our company gave us visibility with apllication performance monitoring that we didnt have. We mostly have containeraized openshift applications and to implement instana was very easy and it gave us with little effort a lot of information. Also big benefit was to integrate it with turbonomic, and to see application performance from application perspective and infrastructure perspective.
  • out of the box traffic information from openshift
  • integration with turbonomic
  • easy defining apps in instana
  • ai integration
  • prediction
very easy getting valubale inforamtions from containers

I am using IBM Instana on AWS Cloud. We are getting slowness issues on our application quite frequently. With the help IBM Instana, we are able to detect the problems and resolve it.
  • detailed deep down tracking of the issues
  • tracing analysis
  • if it is able to show security updates
  • Analytics should be more user friendly
Our application mainly integrated with all other ministries through MQ and Webservices. Its very hard to find the issues during this kind of setup. IBM Instana helping me a lot to find the bottlenecks.

Instana is designed to monitor and analyze the performance of applications in dynamic and containerized environments, such as those based on microservices and Kubernetes. It offers features like automatic discovery of services, tracing of requests across different components, and the ability to detect and diagnose issues affecting application performance.
  • Automatic Discovery and Mapping
  • Dynamic Tracing and Request Monitoring
  • Root Cause Analysis
  • User Interface Complexity
  • Customization and Flexibility
  • Integration with Third-Party Tools
I would recommend IBM Instana based on its strengths in automating application performance monitoring, dynamic tracing, and its ability to handle modern, containerized environments effectively. The automatic discovery and mapping feature, along with AI-powered anomaly detection, provide valuable insights for proactive issue resolution. However, I would consider factors such as the organization's specific technology stack, scalability requirements, and budget constraints. Conducting a thorough evaluation, including a trial or proof of concept, would be essential to ensure that IBM Instana aligns with our unique needs and contributes positively to our technology and business objectives.

Our team caters to different use cases in telecom sector including billing, marketing campaigns, value added services etc. This involves use of APIs, Microservices and Infrastructure from multiple vendors.
Each of these systems have their own format of logs and dependencies between systems is not very clear without having to go back to the documentations. Now we are using Instana as go to tool for identifying issues, improve observability and mapping flows between systems.
Some of the internal consumers have also started using Instana to have a clear picture of application and system state. The amount of information this tool collects (without much additional configuration) to provide insights is really helping both our team and the consumers.
  • Collecting Kubernetes and Infra level logs and presenting in easy to understand visuals.
  • Tracing the end-to-end journey of an event and also categorizing by technology and Endpoints
  • Built-in and custom alerts help to monitor almost all of scenarios without much additional configuration.
  • Ability to create Applications to logical group important flows
  • It's very difficult to create custom dashboards, only a handful of scenarios can be visualized to dashboards.
  • Extracting information from Instana to further analysis into excel for example is something that can be improved. Using an API to get data is very limiting.
  • Open telemetry features which allow to send application data to Instana is not working as documented.
  • Instana handles Kubernetes and Infra logs very well out of the box so teams using microservices or offering IAAS can definitely save a lot of time to improve their application performance and improve observability
  • We can create synthetic checks in place of using another tool to do active checks or pingdom tests
  • We can setup a wide range of monitoring which includes capturing failures, identifying latencies, resource exhaustion (CPU and memory)
  • Sharing insights with management is bit tricky as exporting data is very complicated and Dashboard options available in Instana are very limited

We are using IBM Instana to monitor a set of 15 micro services running in a managed Kubernetes environment on IBM Cloud. IBM Instana gives us visibility into those containers so we can monitor and alert on performance issues.
  • Install and integration with a variety of runtime environments
  • Monitoring of performance at an API level
  • Automatic alerting
  • Support for additional runtime environments (Apache Flink)
  • Ability to monitor for missing components in an application inventory
We use IBM Instana to monitor our application code. It does a great job and provides insights. IBM Instana can also monitor infrastructure level components and databases but we have found native tools do a better job (MongoDB OpsManager for example is a better option for monitoring MongoDB).

IBM Instana has been instrumental in helping my company identify opportunities for performance improvement, which is a key competitive differentiator. The best thing about IBM Instana in production is the amount of time it saves us when investigating performance problems. It immediately highlights where things have changed either positively or negatively saving us valuable analysis time.
  • Monitors heavily utilized Oracle databases in great detail around the clock while incurring only a tiny overhead
  • Provides graphical views of resource usage over time that show exactly where server resources are being consumed by various applications
  • Helps with performance comparison analysis across different time periods and/or different database instances
  • Bit slow when there are millions of logs I've found.
  • Filters to filter the logs
IBM Instana is extremely useful for infra metrics and it is quite easy to set up thresholds without learning any query languages. It is simply the best service which is really helping in real-time monitoring and alerting, and provides fantastic tools to start your troubleshooting with any specific error.

IBM Instana is the only solution that is able to provide a complete view of all the data sources across all our business units, identify anomalies and correlate information.
  • Investigate suspicious activities in employee accounts
  • Reports on computers infected with malware
  • Alerts for instances of equipments going offline
  • Setup could have been a bit easier compared to other alternatives
  • We face delay while integrating few AWS services
The IBM Instana proved to have a speedy return on investment for our company by streamlining our compliance reporting and providing proactive incident investigation capabilities. With IBM Instana all the data will be there and it will be possible to create reports with just the information you really need.

Automatic anomaly detection is performed by us. It follows best practices and is done in an integrated way that would be difficult to achieve on our own.The most significant benefit is the standard monitoring features that come with IBM Instana. It enables us to quickly ascertain the underlying cause of performance issues by assisting in the identification of patterns and departures from typical behavior. His thorough analysis is superb.
  • easy to use
  • real-time graphing results
  • integration with other suppliers
  • the price
  • design of some part of the interface
  • support assistance
The way to track and collect is one of the best things it has and the best recommendation for its use, as other platforms is not as accurate or the time is very long to get results, as for its operation if it is a little difficult to keep up without the help of someone expert.

Our journey with Instana began with the realization that traditional monitoring solutions were no longer sufficient for the IT supporting our construction projects. We use IBM Instana to monitor the performance of our construction management applications, including project management software, scheduling tools and collaboration platforms certifying their availability and responsiveness. Ensuring that these applications run smoothly is essential for efficient project execution.
  • Instana provides a complete picture of our IT infrastructure enabling complete understanding of system health.
  • The automatic discovery and monitoring of all services and applications without any manual configuration.
  • Anomaly detection and root cause analysis of arising issues.
  • Enhanced cost optimization features could further help organizations like ours optimize spending.
IBM Instana is important for organizations looking to monitor their framework and deal with issues before harm is caused. Like in our industry, equipment downtime can be costly. IBM Instana's predictive maintenance capabilities have enabled us to proactively address issues before they lead to down time. for instance our excavator fleet is equipped with IoT sensors connected to Instana allowing us to monitor crucial parameters like engine temperature. When abnormal readings were shown, Instana sent alerts allowing us to schedule maintenance before breakdown.

IBM Instana is tackling the problem of monitoring hundreds of APIs by filtering solely for faulty calls, which saves us a lot of time and makes it simpler to spot problems. IBM Instana is an excellent APM tool that allows me to track my services, analyze their performance, and strive to improve them. It is simple to connect with any production-ready application. IBM Instana has been absolutely fantastic in providing fast cloud system and application feedback, enabling for effective tweaking and real implementation; as a result, we have improved product functionality and performance.
  • It offers a lot of essential functions and is extremely simple to use straight away because of its clear user interface. We have a lot of services operating, and it's much easier to handle now that we have IBM Instana.
  • It includes excellent visual representations in the form of charts, as well as an excellent drill down tool for debugging problematic calls and delayed transactions.
  • With IBM Instana, system and application observability is now entirely automated, which is fantastic; its monitoring and tracing is genuinely transformational; and it is the AI-powered APM platform we've been waiting for.
  • I believe that the "live" option in monitoring does not truly update the status in real-time, thus I must manually update to feel comfortable.
  • The call analysis tool might be improved, third-party resources are restricted, and the pricing is slightly more than competitors in comparable categories.
It performs an excellent job of maximizing all of the capabilities accessible to IBM Instana and can automatically discover, so clients are quite enthusiastic about this strength of IBM Instana. It's appropriate for cloud-native systems and deployments. Java/.NET/nodejs data storage Modern stacks with application servers, caches, NoSQL, SQL, and Async are not appropriate for outdated platforms, ERP platforms, or closed applications that lack standards.

We are using IBM Instana for monitoring stat of Kubernetes Cluster and VMs. Initially, whenever there was issue, we had to look for metric and log manually which was very hectic and it was not consolidated and it used to become very tough of tracking all apps in single place but with use of IBM Instana, it has become very easy for us. we can get all API calls details, errror rate, number of pods , event chnage, alerts all from single tool.
  • Monitoring
  • Alerting
  • Custom Dashboard
  • API Performance
  • Provide better customer support
  • Cost Optimisation Suggestion
As per our use case, it can be used widely across multiple solutions like K8s,VMs, Big data monitoring. In my opinion, UI also very simple to understand and makes it very easy to implement and customise. App monitoring like AWS RDS or S3 bucket also add some extra advantage.support with 3rd party alerting tools also make it worthy than other tools.

We primarily use it for checking for errors, automated notifications, and server level monitoring. That being said, we are planning on expanding out current usage to include supporting specific event investigations as well as customer support investigations rather that for just planning how to correct address problems after they happen.
  • Information
  • Organization of data
  • Interface Layout
  • Flexibility in usage
  • there could be some additional clarification on how logs work since different details seem to be broken apart more, but even this isn't to bad.
Most of the use of IBM Instana has been done by other departments until a few months ago, so I am not to familiar yet with how it has been used or how it was used to resolve events more than a few times at our company, however, I do know it has been fundamental in auditing processes in the past to find problems at all levels of our infrastructure.

I use IBM Instana for monitoring Kubernetes clusters for hardware and software issues, create alerts on log messages and issues since the customer needs to know how the system is behaving or if problems with master data come up.
  • simple Installation
  • Easy configuration
  • User experience of frontend
  • Fresh extension of alerts for logs
  • Uptime checks only seam to be possible with synthetic monitoring
  • Events for logs not grouped
  • Logging of confluent kafka
IBM Instana currently does not have an out-of-the-box solution for monitoring confluent Kafka. The monitoring of internal processes inside your own hosted Kubernetes cluster works great with a fast setup and everything is configurable with easy-to-understand interfaces.

We use primarily as a Application Performance Monitoring tool. We use to checkout CPU, Network, Memory utilization, trends across date ranges.
We also use it track throughput, latency graphs,
  • I Like the date "shift" feature, which analyzed current trend vs x days back trend
  • hardware utilisation graph is really good
  • like the orgnaization of micro services, discoverability is really good
  • notifications about expiry just shows up on the top
as an APM it is exceptional. It is the first thing that we open to check for any prod issues as oncall

As our Hype products regularly attract large amounts of attention along with potential bots, we use IBM Instana in my area to check for the stability of API calls during high heat launches. We also use it to troubleshoot issues within our APP and to find out what went down and what magnitude the spikes causing our issues had.
  • It provides a history of API calls we have along with when spikes occur.
  • It provides an Erroneous call rate showing the stability/user experience in that moment.
  • Through kubernetes clusters we are able to allocate our resources better for demand.
  • Smart alerts and automatic alert systems are somewhat hard to implement.
  • Finding creators of either smart alerts or graphs is also hard to figure out.
  • The learning curve with working on IBM Instana is very high.
If there is a situation where there is high and large variable demand and also bot activity, for example, a short-term limited exclusive item like a luxury shoe, the spikes in calls during these specific times are much more likely to break or slow down our system. Therefore IBM Instana is very useful in those situations.
Companies/departments with very small and steady usage probably do not need to use IBM Instana.

I use IBM Instana for monitoring website errors and performance, and I've been most impressed that I can get real-time updates on Core Web Vitals metrics. It shortens the feedback loop for making a code change to improve performance and makes it really fast and easy without having to wait weeks for updates from Google or other analytics suites.

For general monitoring of backend systems majorly. And to get prompt alerts when system is underperforming
  • Simple to use dashboards
  • Tracing of calls is very much better than other similar tools
  • Seamless integration for backend systems through agent
  • Need to have flexibility for users in building custom metrics
  • Grouping of error messages using patterns matching has to be better
  • Alerting based on custom metrics and multiple conditions at a time should be present
For General monitoring and instrumenting, seamless integrations Instana does a pretty good job, but when it comes to creating more advanced dashboards and metric creations, it lags behind a few other competitors. Instana is very much user-friendly as well, so it can be used by new users as well without any issues.

As someone who is in close contact with QAs and SREs, this tool is one of the common areas where we play and identify risks. It's fast and reliable. Also, the learning curve is great considering that it might look overwhelming at first (if you are working in a big company and have lots of data points). The feature that I appreciate the most is the fact that I can filter requests very deeply and see their latency. This helped greatly when we tried to improve the speed of one of our features.
  • request tracing
  • mitigate risks
  • gives actionable feedback
  • while the learning curve is good, onboarding could be better
  • more help tracing warnings
I would recommend using Instana for any colleague that needs to trace requests, filter them, find patterns, measure latency, and check dependencies of course depending on the business goal.
There are no situations in which I would recommend other tools for these actions, nor similar ones. That's also because we are careful with the number of tools we are using and we keep only the best.

Instana is used for monitoring several business-critical applications both in Production and Non-Production environments. The most important feature that we use is the tracing of HTTP calls and their flow in the private infrastucture of our customers. In particular I used Instana to perform Performance tests on the release candidate software.
  • Tracing of HTTP calls, providing the details of the services involved
  • Auto-discovery of the application stack through online agents installed on the machines
  • Monitoring of the infrastructure
  • More details about the traffic that is flowing (eg. capturing all headers and requests/responses for a small portion of the traffic for troubleshooting purposes)
  • Performance of the web application (Instana itself) sometimes were not good
  • Simplify the infrastructure tab
It is of great help when dealing with very big and dynamic infrastructures where many things may change in terms of services running and resources allocated. It is specifically good for on-premises infrastructures and provides the maximum levels of details in those scenarios in which it is possible to install the custom agent.
