What is Microsoft Entra ID?

Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Microsoft Azure Active Directory or Azure AD) is a cloud-based identity and access management (IAM) solution supporting restricted access to applications with Azure Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) built-in, single sign-on (SSO), B2B collaboration controls, self-service password, and integration with Microsoft productivity and cloud storage (Office 365, OneDrive, etc) as well as 3rd party services.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Identity and access management. We manage all of our users in one database. We manage their permissions, what they can and cannot do. We manage what resources they have access to. That's primarily what it's doing.

Pros

Manages users, connects into other Microsoft resources, internal and external. So it doesn't actually have to be Microsoft. It integrates well with other apps.

Cons

I think it's good.
It does what it does. It does it well. It's been doing it for 40 years, almost. It's pretty solid.

Return on Investment

I think it's helped well with Intune deployment. When we are governing a large subset of users and a large subset of resources, we can quickly identify what users have. End-of-life for device lifecycle management helps us with identity. If we need to identify if we have a rogue user, we can implement things such as conditional access, which is very helpful in our environment. Those are some of the areas.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

So right now we have a hybrid setup with our on-prem Active Directory and our Microsoft Entra ID. So we use it for resetting users' passwords, managing users in the cloud, assigning rights into devices.

Pros

User management in terms of multifactor authentication and enrollment with devices, I think that it manages that well for us.

Cons

Using it is a bit difficult only because there's a lot of deep, buried menus. So to get to certain features, you have to go very deep through different modules to get to where you want to go. So, for instance, if I want to reset a user's multifactor, I have to go to Microsoft Entra ID, then the user, then multifactor, then go to the whole multifactor portal, then reset. So it seems a little bit deep.

Return on Investment

So definitely security. Now we have everything in one place. But single sign-on helped us a lot with password management. We had a lot of disjointed account products that use Microsoft services. So Microsoft Entra ID helped bring all of that together. So the user only has to remember one password.

We use Microsoft Entra ID as two-factor authentication for all users of the banking institution, also giving controlled and secure access to all applications that have been integrated through SSO or other integration methods to ensure excellent segregation of duties as well as good and secure user management.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It addresses security and managing the accounts that we have, and where everybody goes and how everybody accesses Microsoft, it keeps everything organized for us.

Pros

I think it does well in the dashboard. I prefer how it organizes everything in its columns. And then it's easy to traverse the dashboard. It doesn't get confusing. When I'm clinging around things, and a lot of times with Microsoft, they're constantly improving things, and they'll change it on you, and then they'll get into it, and you're like, "Oh, this is new." But it makes it very simple to navigate.

Cons

The only area I would suggest is the name change. Microsoft rebrands a lot, but the apps do the same things, and it gets confusing. If you spend five years learning Microsoft Entra ID or its previous name, and then they change it, you have to adjust. Rebranding app names inside Microsoft Entra ID can be confusing, and the migration is slow. They're trying to upgrade things, but communication has improved a little.

Return on Investment

I think managing costs was probably the biggest one as a nonprofit. We're always worried about the financial impact that any product can have. And as licenses change or they are shut down, migrating to the proper product without going over budget is always something we are concerned about. But for the most part, it's been positive. Microsoft works for us as nonprofits to make sure that we get very fair pricing.
