Use Cases and Deployment Scope

This product serves as both our primary edge firewalls as well as our SD-WAN concentrators and end-points. We occasionally use smaller Barracuda firewalls in mobile or field-office applications as well. We have used Barracuda for general-purpose student web filtering in the past.

Pros

  • Edge Firewall
  • Deployment flexibility
  • Basic SD-WAN

Cons

  • Web Filtering
  • Data Visibility
  • External Reporting / Logging
  • Licensing Model

  • SD-WAN
  • Application Visibility/Classification
  • Web-Filtering

Return on Investment

  • Cost-effective SD-WAN for our smaller sites
  • Basic Web Filtering to backup on-device filters
  • Preventing IBR attacks

First Firewall I feel Comfortable With!

Pros

  • We only use the CudaLaunch now and love it!!

Cons

  • I can't think of anything

Return on Investment

  • It saved us during the pandemic
  • Good easy to use interface
  • We no longer have to call support every time we need to make a change - like on our Cisco firewall

Alternatives Considered

Cisco ASA

The only firewalls you will need

Pros

  • It is just a dang good firewall. It does things some of the more expensive firewalls (not going to call out ASA) cannot do at a fraction of the cost.
  • Barracuda's support is second to none.

Cons

  • I can't really think of any. I am sure there are some areas it could improve on, but right now I have 0 complaints about anything on them.

Return on Investment

  • Really neutral given we came from the x series. The move to the x series was a huge positive in terms of time spent managing and the ability to get what needed to be done, well done. The move to the NG was just the next step.
  • I will say the one thing, in terms of value, that is given is the firewall admin application. This one program saves a ton of time in configuration versus using the web-based configuration. You can only pick one, and for me, it's a no brainer - turn the web-based config off and use the app.

An appliance rich in features and protection for the network.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our nextgen Barracuda CloudGen Firewall F380 has been a key part of the company's protection and security. It was acquired about 2 years ago from a reseller and since then it has been our network edge defense. The appliance is complete and in addition to a firewall, it has other advanced protection features such as URL filtering, application control, VPN and anti-malware. We use a topology with 2 appliances in active-standby, the first one is the main one and the second one is for redundancy. With our scenario, the network is always very safe from attacks and vulnerabilities.

Pros

  • Increased level of network protection against threats.
  • Visibility and control of applications that users access.
  • URL Filtering to block unauthorized or prohibited websites on the internal corporate network.
  • Protection against diverse malware at the edge of the network.
  • Firewall redundancy with another backup appliance.

Cons

  • The url filtering and application control licenses are not perpetual and need to be renewed every year.

Most Important Features

  • Firewall with deep packet inspection and built-in IPS.
  • Robust hardware that supports more than 80,000 simultaneous connections.
  • Web protection with URL Filtering functionality and application control.
  • VPN site to site and remote.
  • Offers protection against malware.

Return on Investment

  • Prevents cyber attacks and optimizes network and user management.
  • The security has been improved and made more reliable.

Other Software Used

Norton, IdSurvey, Juniper AP Series Access Points, AWS Serverless Application Repository, AWS Backup, Acronis Advanced Backup
