We rely on Micro Focus Data Protector to protect our customers' data, showing its compatibility with different environments and its great power to handle backups of large environments. It has a very intuitive management console where we can perform almost any action.
  • Compatibility
  • Simplicity
  • Robust
  • Support
  • New features in less time.
It is the appropriate software for large companies, where hundreds of backup tasks are handled. It is the stage where it shows all its power. It is enterprise software. The least appropriate would be a small virtual environment, where much power is not required, although it could be used just as well.

Basically, the product is used for protection needs related to critical, productive, and corporate information from different platforms and Applications. Some others have to do with billing information, appraisal of telephone calls, and projection in future areas of business. And about trade issues, there is really no such in fact, but at the moment there is a support renewal process, given by the migration of versions that are in progress.
  • Stability and reliability.
  • Friendly environment.
  • Wide range of compatibility with multiple platforms.
  • Easy to configure and install.
  • Increase the range of support for new platforms.
  • Improve the attention of support cases in terms of speed of attention.
  • Keep me better informed of the latest solution updates.
Suitable and stable for backups of Databases and other online information. Suitable and stable for platforms based on virtual environments. Easy to configure for devices where the information is saved.

We use Micro Focus Data Protector as a backup tool for our SQL Server, Oracle Database, Vmware, and file system environments.
  • Micro Focus Data Protector has a very customizable backup schedule, allowing to edit the flat file according to our security policies.
  • Micro Focus Data Protector has a very easy to use interface.
  • We can update its clients in a very easy way.
  • There are some hard-to-implement integrations, such as Office 365, Acrople virtual center, and Vmware granular recovery
  • Some hardware is discontinued, despite their factories still having support, like a tape library, for example.
  • Micro Focus Data Protector support has to improve a better service. Some open cases take too long to solve.
Well suited: scenarios with very specific backups schedules; backups saved in tape libraries.

Less appropriate: environments with older Operational Systems and older hardware, such as tape libraries.

Assure that the core enterprise applications and middleware products like SAP, SAP HANA, ORACLE Databases, PostgreSQL Databases, SQL-Server, Sharepoint, windows, and Linux filesystems are having a valid backup of the data.
  • Good application integrations.
  • Great variety of supported backup target devices.
  • Single pane of glass for all type of backups.
  • Support for cloud native architecture.
Micro Focus Data Protector is strong in enterprise application integrations and has a great variety of supported storage and backup target devices. The integration of cloud-based applications and services is brand new and not fully integrated into the existing solution.

We use Micro Focus Data Protector for all workloads, be it file system backup, SQL databases, Oracle, VMware, Hyper-V, SAP HANA, etc. In the future, we will add cloud workloads (e.g. MS365) and containers (OpeShift, Tanzu, ....), which we also want to back up with Micro Focus Data Protector. Micro Focus Data Protector is our main backup product which we use and sell in-house and to our customers.
  • works on nearly every platform
  • addresses nearly every workload (physical, virtual, databases, etc.)
  • easy to install, configure and handle
  • good documentation
  • combination for DP and DP4CW under one roof (GUI)
  • better reporting (f.e.: a report which client selections are within a backup spec, which spec uses which backup device,...)
  • SAP HANA Restore with DP GUI
  • Zero Downtime Backup with IBM Storewiz Storage Systems
Micro Focus Data Protector can be used in pretty much any physical and virtual environment as it has a wide range of integrations, including SAP HANA, MaxDB, Oracle, etc. It is also supported on almost any operating system, whether Windows, Linus, or AIX.Also, a large number of storage arrays are supported which can be used as backup targets (on-premise and in the cloud). There is still room for improvement in the integration of cloud workloads into the DP GUI. Like the backup of Exchange Online, the other workloads should also move to the HTML5 GUI (complete MS365 suite, Proxmox, OpenShift, etc.).Likewise, the possibility of SAP HANA restores should migrate to the GUI, e.g. to ensure system copies.

HP Data Protector was being used by my organization to backup Oracle Database related systems.
  • Longevity. We could go back 6 months+ to recover data.
  • Reliability. Always worked.
  • I had light interaction with this system, so it would not be fair for me to say where there is a need for improvement. It worked the way we need it do to get the job done.
We needed it for Oracle DB backup on both Unix and Windows Servers. Works well in both environments.

We used HP Data Protector as a backup for all of our Windows and Unix servers. We had the server side node installed on HP-UX while the backup drives used were the HP MSL 6030 and MSL 2024. It offered a simple backup solution on a reliable backend. The trouble we ran into most of all were the limitations at the time to write to disk efficiently. They were behind the ball for us in terms of deduplication technology at the time.
  • It is very reliable on the server side to provide a trustworthy back end.
  • The install was simple and provided an easy way to install and backup Unix servers.
  • The support was always helpful and responded quickly.
  • They seem to be behind the ball on adapting newer technology.
  • Importing backup indexes were not the easiest task and required a Unix admin.
  • The client side install was not very compact.
I believe it is very well suited for the Unix/Linux brands but once you get into the Windows side of things there are much better options out there. The other problem is that the data is in a format that only works with HP Data Protector and cannot be migrated to another system should things go that direction in the future. Once you are locked into HP Data Protector you are truly locked in.

HP Data Protector is our enterprise wide backup and recovery solution, we have been using HP Data Protector for 17 years. We currently have two cell managers one that is on the current version 9.04 and one that is on version 7.03 for our legacy operating systems, Oracle and MSSQL databases. This flexibility allows us the ability to backup and restore critical production systems and databases with the older version which supports these architectures and platforms and also have a solution that supports the latest operating systems and databases with our 9.04 cell.
  • Easy to install and set up cell manager, deploy clients and configure backup devices. Integration options for databases and virtual environments makes backup and restore of these systems easier through the GUI.
  • Scheduling options allow the user to set specific times for backups of a host or group them together with the advance scheduling option and set priorities of which systems get access to backup devices.
  • Licensing options are tiered and can scale from a very small environment to a larger one when needed.
  • Granular recovery extension plugins need to be documented better and kept up to date, this would aid in the installation of these plugins.
  • When deploying Granular Recovery Extensions for VMware and Exchange, security options of the cell need to be turned off (Secure Cell and Encrypted Communication).
  • Reporting on scheduled backups via the advanced scheduling option are non-existent, this needs to be available.
HP Data Protector is suited for medium to large environments that are mixed platform shops, it can handle backup and restores of most major databases and MS applications along with Unix and Linux. It has de-duplication and backup to disk functionality which can be licensed as needed. The virtual environment backup options cover the major players in that area.

HP Data Protector was being used for back ups.
  • Nothing it is an average product.
  • Tech support - every person I spoke with had a different idea on how to fix a problem. Many times they caused the problem resulting in double or triple work.
Ask about tech support and set reasonable expectations.
