We use it to track performance, manage time cards, maintain employee data, and handle a variety of other HR-related functions.

Pros

  • Paycom does a lot of things well. It manages data effectively, and its user-friendliness is probably the biggest advantage compared to other HRIS platforms I've used. Also, shout out to Bethany A. Hearn for putting up with our rambling questions, and to Lauren Barrs as well.

Cons

  • I have to say that the new look doesn't really draw your eye in any particular direction. Maybe I just need to get used to it—I don't know.

Paycom is well suited for managing data, and I would say the time and attendance functionality is pretty strong as well. However, the survey feature doesn't have as much capability as I would like.

Everything, basically—talent acquisition, benefits, employee self-service, time clocks, and attendance. We use Paycom in almost every way possible except for recruiting and training. For training, we use Relias, so we don't use Paycom's training module.

Pros

  • I like the employee self-service feature. It's very straightforward and easy to use. I also like my representative, Mikey. He's been very helpful—every time I call him, I get the assistance I need. I also appreciate how quickly I can get someone on the phone and get help when needed.

Cons

  • I would say transferring employees from another company can be challenging. If you're rehiring or transferring someone, you often have to re-enter a lot of the information again. It's not always easy to move people around within the system, and it can feel repetitive because you're entering the same information multiple times.

We use Paycom for payroll, applicant tracking, leave management, performance reviews, and performance counseling. Overall, we use it for a wide variety of human resources functions.

Pros

  • The payroll system is very easy to use and process compared to what I worked with previously. Onboarding employees is also incredibly simple because they can complete much of the process before arriving at the office on their first day, which saves us a significant amount of time.

Cons

  • One area I'd like to see improved is the applicant tracking system. I wish there were a way to upload resumes from candidates who didn't apply through the system and have Paycom automatically capture their information. That would allow recruiters to move candidates through the process directly, rather than having to send them a link and require them to apply again just to get into the system.

As I mentioned, the onboarding process is incredibly easy. We have around 300 employees and are constantly hiring, so Paycom has been a huge help. In fact, the ATS functionality was a major factor in our decision to switch to Paycom.

Paycom serves as our HRIS and houses all of our employee information. Employees use it to set up direct deposit, view their leave accrual balances, and manage information related to our two accrual-based leave types: sick leave and vacation leave. It's also where we conduct performance appraisals and process payroll. Employees can access tax information, view their pay rates and earnings, and manage other payroll-related details. In addition, all employee demographic information is stored in the system, and employees have access to the self-service platform to manage much of their information independently.

The business problem we were trying to solve was how to create a more efficient system that consolidates employee data, performance information, and training records into one place while providing easy access for both employees and administrators. For HR, payroll, and finance teams, it means having employee information readily available at our fingertips. For employees, it provides direct access to their own information, reducing the need to contact us with routine questions or requests for assistance.

Pros

  • I think the employee self-service platform is very easy to access and use. Our employees generally don't have trouble finding information, understanding where it's located, or figuring out how to access it. We also don't provide extensive training on the platform, which speaks to how intuitive it is. From the employee's perspective, it's a highly accessible and user-friendly system.

Cons

  • One limitation is that Paycom doesn't have an open API. I'm not sure whether that's something they plan to address, but because of that, it doesn't integrate directly with our other systems. For example, we're a consulting company that bills clients for our time, so we can't use Paycom as our billing system because it doesn't communicate with the platforms we use for client billing. Instead, we use VantagePoint for billing and then have to download data into Excel spreadsheets and upload it into Paycom for payroll processing. It's a time-consuming process that I don't particularly like. Since it involves manual data transfers through Excel, there's also a greater risk of human error.
  • That's probably the biggest issue because it affects how information gets entered into employee records. Changes such as salary adjustments or increases in hours require a Personnel Action Form (PAF). As far as I know, there isn't a way for employees to directly submit requests for things like a salary increase or a change in hours through the system. Instead, everything has to go through HR, which creates a lengthy process involving multiple emails, approvals, and manual action forms. It can be very time-consuming, especially when handling a high volume of employee changes.
  • I have a couple of concerns. One is that Paycom doesn't offer an open API, at least not one we can use. Because of that, it doesn't integrate with our other systems. We're a consulting company, so we bill clients based on time worked, but we can't use Paycom as our billing system because it doesn't communicate directly with our other platforms. Instead, we use VantagePoint for billing and then download the data into Excel spreadsheets, which must be uploaded into Paycom for payroll processing. The process is time-consuming, and because it relies on manual spreadsheet transfers, there are more opportunities for human error.
  • Because we're a consulting firm, our hourly information is tied directly to our billing rates. Since we can't use hourly data as we'd like, we have to convert everything into weekly or biweekly rates, which can sometimes create rounding errors. I recently spent nearly three hours investigating a payroll issue to calculate $6.04 in retroactive pay for an employee because of a rounding discrepancy tied to a billing rate. The issue wasn't caused by Paycom itself—it resulted from the manual process of moving data from Paycom to VantagePoint, making adjustments, then exporting it back to Paycom and re-importing it. That workflow is a nightmare.
  • Beyond that, I feel the performance appraisal system could offer more flexibility and personalization, as it can be somewhat limiting in its current form. Our HR generalist also spends a significant amount of time manually activating and updating items within the system to fit our processes, and I don't like how long that takes. With a workforce of 750 employees, we simply don't have the time for so many manual administrative tasks.

To summarize, Paycom is a great fit for smaller organizations that need a platform to manage employee data, leave tracking, payroll, and other core HR functions. However, as companies grow and require greater customization and integration with other systems, Paycom can become more limiting. For larger organizations with complex operational needs that lack flexibility, this can present challenges and is one of the platform's biggest drawbacks.

Clocking in, benefits, PTO is also on there. So if you need to request time off, scheduling is on there as well. Paycheck processing—I was going to say your hours and stuff, but that goes into paycheck processing. But yeah, essentially everything on the back end when it comes to paying, onboarding, and all of that.

Pros

  • Oh, I love this. Since I'm working with two different companies, they have a way to pull up your main company, so it's easier to clock in. Sometimes I'm coming in with like two minutes to spare before clocking in, so it's nice to pull that up and hit clock in right away instead of having to go through the whole interface. Other than that, everything is really organized. I've never gotten lost trying to figure out where something was or anything like that. It's very user-friendly and beginner-friendly as well.

Cons

  • Maybe on the payment side... Probably when your checks get processed. It'll show me when past checks have been processed and everything like that. Something I got paid for back in February will be at the top of my list because it's the first of the month. So if I wanted to see when I'd get paid in June, I'd have to click through to find the June pay period. Other than that, that's really it. It's just a few extra steps to see when my pay period is, but nothing terrible. It's a good app.

I like the training modules that we can upload to Paycom as well. So if there needs to be employee-wide training, I like that we can do it online instead of individually emailing it out or pulling everybody in to watch a video on a screen, which can be difficult. The clock-in stuff is super easy. I forgot to mention this earlier. It's really easy to go back and adjust your time, and it's easy for me to review on the back end, too, if someone has to adjust their time. It's flagged for me, so it's very easy. It's cool too because sometimes it'll round down. So if I'm supposed to be at work at 10 and I clock in at 10:01, usually the Paycom system ends up rounding down to that time. At least that's something I've noticed. I don't know if that's by design, but I like that.

What we wanted to do when we went live with Paycom, when we were looking for a new solution, was to try to put our arms around everything because we had a separate payroll system. We had a separate ATS. And Paycom gives us payroll and ATS. We have a new survey tool we'll be using. We have a communication tool called Micom that lets us send messages to all the employees around our company. Texting is something that we're going to start using as well for individual communication.

People today want things now. They want immediacy, and they don't want to come to HR and ask, "How many PTO hours do I have left?" They want to be able to open their phone, log in, and see exactly how much PTO they have left. Did it get approved if they have an expense and they submitted it for approval? They want to see if that has been turned in quickly. It's just 2026. It's like they're in the future.

Pros

  • Paycom does a particularly good job of updating and taking in information. We have a rep named Alex Cisco, who I hear from two or three times a month. He’ll just want to drop by and say, “Hey, how’s the product working? Is there anything I can do to help you with the product? And by the way, do you know about this new feature?” If I have feedback, I give it to Alex, and if he doesn’t know how to fix it that day, he’ll take it to research and development, and we may see an answer for it a month or two down the road.

Cons

  • Apostrophes, quotation marks, dashes. Sometimes when I'm using Micom, and I want to send a message out, and I put in quotation marks or a dash, it tells me that's not allowed, and I have to go back and redo my message because for whatever issue I've got grammatically, it doesn't go through.

We have an amusement park that's about four hours away called Dollywood, and every now and then, we'll get a discount coupon for Dollywood. Instead of printing a ton of them and just leaving them at somebody's desk or putting them on a bulletin board, I can download that flyer and send it to all 2,000 employees just like that, and they can access it.

Our previous provider was terrible from my experience. Processing payroll was an all day affair and Paycom has significantly reduced our processing time!
