We use ShieldSquare to detect and prevent bot traffic and to detect users who try to download content from our website using automated programs (site rippers) like HTTrack.
Pros
Bot detection is great, goes far beyond checking user agents or requests/second.
Lots of integration options. You can use connectors in your code (php, javascript, etc) or in your webserver (nginx, etc.)
Support is awesome.

Supply precompiled versions of nginx with the ShieldSquare connector.

ShieldSquare provides an easy to implement way of identifying website users that could be bots.
By rating the potential of the user of being a bot, we are able to handle that user in the proper way.
False positives are extremely rare with ShieldSquare. Plus, their support staff is also available to analyze traffic to specific content, and they can customize their algorithms when necessary to optimize the performance of their solution to suit our needs.

If someone needs a bot mitigation solution and they are losing customers/users because of it, I would recommend ShieldSquare with no reservations.
We have registered sellers all around the world who can post their items on MusicStack to sell their hard to find vinyl records and CDs. Users can search the items by artist, title, country, price, format, seller ratings, etc., and purchase. Bot activity was ruining our analytics reporting and hence we could not get clear and meaningful metrics so that we could display accurate graphs for our users and how many people (not bots!) where viewing and interacting with their listed products. We integrated ShieldSquare to protect our website from various bots and now only human traffic is being included in our analytics and traffic reporting.

It would be nice to allow for more granularity when selecting which bots I'd like to allow through. I contacted support and asked about this and they said this was in the works.
If you select to show captchas instead of blocking, I feel their captcha screen could use some improvement on the UI/UX to make it more intuitive for users to know what to do. I contacted support and made them aware of this.
Would be nice to see captchas information in the statistics (i.e. how many captchas were presented, from what IP addresses, how many were filled out correctly),

ShieldSquare is well-suited to control unwanted traffic from bots such as social media crawlers, price and content scrapers. It may not be suited for stopping threats like SQL injection or XSS attacks as they fall under the firewall category.
