Bot Mitigation Software

Bot Mitigation Software Overview

What is Bot Mitigation Software?

Bot mitigation software protects website and web apps from malicious traffic and misuse carried out by bots. These unwanted activities may include credential theft, content scraping or intellectual property theft, or resource hoarding on ecommerce sites. Malicious bots are the most frequent threat faced by popularly trafficked websites. So mitigation tools, or bot management software, present various means of shutting down useless or disruptive bot traffic landing on and bogging down web properties.

Automated tasks, or bots, represent by various estimates roughly half of Internet traffic. Many of these automated tasks are not malicious, and are performing useful tasks that improve search engine efficiency. Malicious bots are frequently used to gain unfair advantage over competition (e.g. in ecommerce, to make a competitor's goods appear to be out of stock, etc.), conduct fraud via account takeover, or perform other sleazy tasks. Some bots may not be strictly illegal and are merely annoying, but can become problematic through their sheer volume, such as by hogging system resources.

Through various means these bots can be identified and blocked, task-by-task, or in bulk (e.g. IP blacklisting). Bot managers provide this mitigation. Tools in this class of software may compete for business, or they may work cleanly in tandem. It depends on what they do.

Bot mitigation is related to DDoS protection solutions, security tools that specifically prevent high-volume bot traffic from overwhelming sites and apps and preventing legitimate users from accessing them. Both solutions represent part of an application security strategy.
