General Sage accounting review.

Rating: 7 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Sage Accounting is a basic product for small businesses. It is correct for minimal needs (ex, we cannot produce a budget in Sage). Besides all the trouble we had with the bank connection (on/off a lot of the time in 2025 for periods of a month or more), it has been stable for 3-4 months. But today, another bug appeared; the amounts showed when matching a bank transaction are in Euro, even though all our settings are in Canadian dollars. Besides that, the product is stable et functionnal for minimal needs. I would recommend it for a very small business.

Pros

  • The approval of temporary invoices scanned by Sage.
  • The bank reconciliation.

Cons

  • Should be able to create a budget and compare it with the real data; this is basic in accounting.
  • Should have more flexibility on which column we want to show on the invoice, and not only the choice of 2 models, depending on whether it is a service or a product.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Sage Accounting to manage my electrician client. He runs his own electrical company as the main technician. We mainly use Sage to track all expenses and revenue. We also use it to write invoices and track current jobs.

Pros

  • Invoicing system is very user friendly
  • I like the practical setup of the website
  • The banking tab is very convenient and user friendly

Cons

  • Reporting is quite messy and confusing. Often innacurate
  • Editing bills once reconciled isn't possible which can be frustrating when needing to adjust accounts

Likelihood to Recommend

If your business is in the beginning stages and you need a basic accounting system to help you stay on top of your financials Sage Accounting is great. If you're books are a little bit more complex then I would recommend something else.

A Long Time Sage User

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As a freelance bookkeeper dealing with multiple companies, Sage is by far the best program. I've heard other bookkeepers describe Sage as the ideal product for accounting professionals. It gives me the scope I need to provide the accounting services for my clients that they rely on.

Pros

  • financial statements, one period or comparable
  • payables and receivables reports
  • CRA reports

Cons

  • I really don't like the tax reports. Why are they spread over so many columns when it is not necessary?
  • The same with the project reports. I have to spend too much time formatting them manually.

Likelihood to Recommend

Sage is well suited for an accountant who works with clients who prefer to be hands-off, and simply hand everything over to their bookkeeper/accountant. One has to have knowledge of accounting in order to be able to use Sage to its full potential, as Sage is definitely made for those who are comfortable with accounting terms and practices.

Great accounting software

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Sage Accounting for all my daily accounting needs. The tools are functional and easy to use. The various report options are also very helpful.

Pros

  • Reporting function provides timely information.
  • Ease to use interface allows ease of navigation.
  • Syncing with bank accounts to download transactions.

Cons

  • The mobile app needs better functionality.
  • Having a separate panel for overall settings is cumbersome.
  • The character limits for notes should be increased.

Likelihood to Recommend

In my opinion, Sage Accounting is well suited for small to medium business. Larger businesses may need additional functionality.

A solid software for remote financial management

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are a multi-province non-profit association and all staff work remotely. Our part-time finance officer posts to Sage Accounting online and I'm able to have timely financial reports at my fingertips whenever I need it. I don't have to email a request for a pdf of a report and then wait a week till she works again which is what we had to do when she used an offline version of the software. This has improved the ease of my work and made things much more efficient.

It has also made our annual audit easier. We can provide a limited access login to our accountant. We no longer have to meet in person or upload a copy of our Sage Accounting file.

Pros

  • exports xls reports by account with custom dates
  • generate balance sheets and income statements on demand
  • allows different people to have different levels of access, set by the primary user

Cons

  • the server is slow
  • we miss having JE numbers for simpler reference to individual entries

Likelihood to Recommend

We manage funds on behalf of several groups, so we are very active on the balance sheet/liability side. Being able to export a report for a specific group, showing the money we hold for them and the expenses and income to that account has really improved our reporting to our constituents.

We keep using it

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using and supporting businesses who are using Sage Accounting in accounting and bookkeeping departments. The software allows to track all accounting information such as expenses and revenue, payroll, inventory, Canada taxes, etc

Pros

  • accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • payroll
  • invoicing and forms

Cons

  • Custom forms not incorporated into database (residing separately)
  • session recovery after freeze

Likelihood to Recommend

I generally prefer Sage Accounting to, for example, Quickbooks software because I experience less network connectivity issues and initial setup is a breeze. The functionality appears to be identical for what we are using it.

I am using Sage Accounting as an administrator in our organization. There are two persons accessing the account including another three persons working as a part time outsourced accounting work.

The Sage Accounting address all our accounting needs. we are using the software for account receivable, account payables and general ledger.

Pros

  • Recording Vendor and reconciling accounts easily
  • Recording customers sales account and reconciling
  • Monthly financial management reporting for the Board of Directors

Cons

  • There is a room for improvement with regards to the bank reconciliation accounts
  • There are ways in which the imports of csv files can be done easily for bank reconciliations
  • Reversals and adjustments can be made easily

Likelihood to Recommend

Sage Accounting is well suited for small and medium sized organization. At the same time this accounting software is good for the not-for profit organization. Sage Accounting might not be very suitable for very large corporations, particularly for the construction management companies. The construction management companies working on number of projects where they do the progress billings, based on time, cost & percentage of completion basis.

  • Easy to track status of invoices
  • Easy to send invoices to clients
  • Easy to add new clients to system

Cons

  • Reporting was not as straight forward
  • Had a harder time doing higher level bookkeeping

It's very easy to make invoices and keep track of their status. It's harder to do things like run profit and loss. Not as straightforward when it comes to the recording aspect of bookkeeping.

Great Product easy integration

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Sage Accounting for all accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, and HR requirements for the business. It integrates payroll to my bank account and accounting so there is no need for manual entries and less chance for human errors. The app simplifies our accounting records and saves us time by being synced in the cloud. The support team is also very useful and helpful to resolve any issues in a timely manner.

Pros

  • Integration with bank feeds and credit card payments.
  • Reports for year-end, remittance, etc.
  • Payroll and direct deposit integration.

Cons

  • Some feature release sometimes break other features, but their dev team is quick to fix it.
  • The automatic bank feeds disconnects often for security reasons, but reconnecting sometimes is buggy, although that is done with a third party integration called Plaid.
  • I wish the deadline for submitting payments for payroll would automatically update when I change the pay date. Currently, it stays as the deadline of the initial pay date, so if you change it you don't know if the deadline is passed or not until you tried to submit payments.

Likelihood to Recommend

Sage Accounting is good for issuing new invoices and tracking expenses by directly connecting bank feeds, which makes bookkeeping easy and less time consuming. It can generate reports very quickly and easily so you can have a quick overview of the business financials whenever you need, no need to wait for accounting to do it. We haven't come across any accounting scenarios where Sage Accounting was not well suited to achieve our task.
