Reliable storage platform that offers a full set of additional roles
Use Cases and Deployment Scope
We use a Synology DiskStation in our environment as a basic file server for centralized storage for several different departments. Rather than spin up and maintain an expensive file server, the portability and efficiency of a NAS better suits our needs. It is also set up as a part of our 3-2-1 backup plan.
Pros
- Ease of setup and management
- Ability to expand storage if needed
- Additional roles can be assigned to the NAS by installing packages
Cons
- None for our use case
Likelihood to Recommend
In a SOHO environment, the Synology DiskStation is a great device that not only allows for file storage in various data redundancy formats, but it can also take on other roles such as a backup, mail, DNS, or DHCP server. Most models allow for performance improvements with expandable RAM as well.
