Overall Satisfaction with Synology DiskStation

Synology DiskStation is responsible to control my NAS which is responsible for the backup of all my computers. DS is specialized for Synology DiskStation and has applications to control the health of each hard drive, automated backup and file management. It allows us to run custom JavaScript applications since we can install docker, node and other applications and software. For that it is worthwhile.

Pros

  • Run automatic backups
  • Monitor Hard Drive health
  • Allow running applications
  • Can run background server application

Cons

  • Allow users to configure on a click
  • Update the app store
  • Tutorials
  • No more cloud backup
  • Active backup with different versions
  • Remote control via app
It was developed by Synology for Synology products. It is the only way to go. Overall it does the job very well and having the app store to install some software downloaded from their servers is a plus. You could have the same results using Linux but you would lose functionalities
Synology NAS replaced any cloud storage for way cheaper, more controlled and expansible. Qnap is the second best and was also an option but back then it had less functionalities. It does the backup just as Synology DiskStation but the support was better on the Synology DiskStation. That and the fact the price and modules for physical expansion are available, Synology DiskStation became my choice

Do you think Synology DiskStation delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Synology DiskStation's feature set?

Yes

Did Synology DiskStation live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Synology DiskStation go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Synology DiskStation again?

Yes

Suites for backups and management of other Synology products. Communication between different manufacturers is harder.

Using Synology DiskStation

10 - They are scientists that need to backup their data, papers and scientific work. They use the active backup daily besides an external HD.
They have zero knowledge on the software but since the implementation they are more relaxed.
I am the only user that setups the environment and install the software in their laptops and PCs
1 - You need to software engineer that is capable of working on networks. You have tutorials on the internet that will go step by step over what needs to be done to set up the first time backup and after that everything goes automatically. Unless you want to make the server available on the cloud. You will need Dan to use VPN and set up a VPN connection for everyone
  • Backup data
  • Remote access
  • Safety
  • Run it as a server
  • Run our own software
As long as Synology give us support for our hard drivers we will not change. I know Synology has now forced their hands to buy their own hard drivers and their new line of products. But if we still have support for old hard drivers from other manufacturers then we will still use Synology Nas. Otherwise we change manufacturers
