Overall Satisfaction with Akamai Cloud Computing

We use Akamai Cloud Computing to host web servers for web application purposes. We're currently supporting multiple different clients on a single linode and are scaling towards hundreds of thousands of monthly users. Clients range from WordPress installations to custom applications written in PHP and backed by MySQL databases, all hosted on linodes.

Pros

  • Simple and fast interface.
  • Fair and simple pricing.
  • Continuously developers their offering adding more capabilities.
  • Fantastic support.

Cons

  • Missing functionality compared to peers, for example DigitalOcean.
  • Historically used to lower prices regularly to stay competitive, not so much anymore.
  • Not very differentiated from similar cloud providers.
  • Was able to scale our company from 0 to hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue, even with challenging scaling needs.
  • Grew with our usage. Added features and capabilities as we needed them.
  • Their support was able to swiftly figure things out in times of stress and need.
It is more user-friendly than the big three cloud providers like AWS and GCP. The interface blows them out of the water; pricing is so much more competitive—no egregious bandwidth fees like AWS. As a small startup, cutting out the overhead of ultra-complex UI and pricing dramatically helps. It seems to be matched tit-for-tat with DigitalOcean, and their UI is similar in many ways. DigitalOcean has more mature capabilities, even though Linode/Akamai was founded earlier. Linode/Akamai provides better price-per-performance, though, as DigitalOcean is expensive nowadays.
I've asked many levels of questions. From noob how-to-setup-my-server questions to ask for more IP addresses and help in getting them set up. They always respond swiftly and relevantly. Compared to other providers, you have to bounce a couple of times with different levels of support actually to land on someone who _understands_ your problem. Other providers, even if they are actively having downtime, their support will respond hours later. Not Linode/Akamai. They are always there for you. They promise this, and they do deliver.

Do you think Akamai Cloud Computing delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Akamai Cloud Computing's feature set?

Yes

Did Akamai Cloud Computing live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Akamai Cloud Computing go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Akamai Cloud Computing again?

Yes

Great for cheaply and simply spinning up a cloud architecture for your application. It has everything you need: an API, Terraform provider, etc, that modern software companies need and rely on. If you're unsure how hosting VPS works, their support is speedy and helpful. This is a key differentiator. Pricing is very fair and competitive but middle-of-the-road. For a startup, it will suit you very well for a long time. It's a smaller provider with less reach than, for example, DigitalOcean. More tools are built with the assumption of DigitalOcean, AWS, GCP, and Azure, so relying on other tools might require a rethink. It might be less of a fit if you need big-company things like a swarm of consultants with certifications.

Using Akamai Cloud Computing

1 - Founder, CTO
1 - Just me, the CTO
  • VPS hosting
  • File storage
  • Redundancy
  • Because of their good cost per performance ratio, we can utilise them more than other providers
  • They provide a breadth of services, so we could in theory switch all stuff to them, but the cost benefit is not yet mandating that switch
Been using them for over 12 years now. Very few issues, their support is perfection itself and they are expanding their services and improving their UI.

Evaluating Akamai Cloud Computing and Competitors

  • Cloud Solutions
  • Scalability
  • Ease of Use
  • Other
Pricing and ease of use are most important for us. We used to have all workloads on Akamai Cloud Computing, but ultimately switched most of our workloads to DigitalOcean. This was about 5 years ago when they were still Linode and still lagging behind, but now they are caught up. So we're definitely regretting that decision since DigitalOcean is too expensive now.
I'd look at the velocity of development and what new developments are being added. Many years ago they were stagnant, but now they are caught up and providing a great experience. They were/are not venture backed so they didn't need to do the pricing bait-and-switch either like DO did.

Akamai Cloud Computing Implementation

Akamai Cloud Computing scaled with us. Never locked us in or took exorbitant prices. Using tooling like Terraform and Ansible really helped to streamline the implementation.
Yes - We've gradually expanded our use as we scaled our business. We were able to go from 1 server to 20+ servers seamlessly and cost-effectively. Can honestly say that ACC helped us build our business. We owe a lot to them.

Basically started with a server, that we either upgraded when resources were tight, or split up services to multiple servers when needed. Used Terraform to streamline things, but also images from their end.
  • We weren't too versed in linux and servers, so had to learn on the go. Their guides were excellent and helped a TON

Akamai Cloud Computing Training

Yes, their UI is intuitive and their guides were an excellent resource to learn and expand our knowledge of self-hosting and securing servers etc. Their "Setup your server" guides built my Linux knowledge

Configuring Akamai Cloud Computing

With Terraform and Ansible it's easy. Lots of options in their own UI, and one-click-apps work great when needed. Can definitely set it up as you'd like. Specs can be upgraded and disk etc can be attached as needed.
It really depends on your own needs. Start of simple. Use the UI for setting up initial stuff, then you can upgrade to Terraform/Ansible/other solutions when needed. Don't buy more than you need since you can easily upgrade. Redundancy is good to build in as you grow so upgrading is simple.
No - there is no facility to customize the interface

Akamai Cloud Computing Support

ProsCons
Quick Resolution
Good followup
Knowledgeable team
Problems get solved
Kept well informed
No escalation required
Immediate help available
Support understands my problem
Support cares about my success
Quick Initial Response
None
No, we don't have that many important workloads on ACC and their regular support is great.
Our servers became unresponsive and we contacted support. They responded pretty instantly (other providers can take hours, days!) and instantly was talking to someone who new about servers and linux. We got commands to test connections on our servers and was able to provide great insights that helped us resolve the issue. It was clear that we were talking to a human, and not just someone copying and pasting responses from a standard form. 100% would recommend

Using Akamai Cloud Computing

Simple and clear, no BS interface. From a design perspective it's no Apple or Stripe, but it does what it needs without making me want to stick a fork in my eyes, like when being forced to use Azure, AWS or GCP.
ProsCons
Like to use
Relatively simple
Easy to use
Well integrated
Consistent
Quick to learn
Convenient
Feel confident using
Requires technical support
Lots to learn
  • Quick and easy setup of new VPS's
  • Navigation is clear and relevant
  • Given the nature of things, it does require some technical skill to know what to do (setting up servers etc)

Akamai Cloud Computing Reliability

Covers all bases. Fast servers and multiple regions. Can't say anything but good things here. Reliability is great as well.
Very little issues. Used to be more previously but in the past years don't have anything negative to say about them and haven't had any issues whatsoever.
Servers are well dimensioned and price performant. Of course one always wants more, so if they were to upgrade their hardware for the same price I'd consider moving more workloads. Networking - never had an issue. Hardware speeds - disks are fast and can grow to great size.

Integrating Akamai Cloud Computing

  • File import/export
  • API (e.g. SOAP or REST)
None in particular. It's up to your individual use-case. Make sure that your firewall and networking policys are tight so you don't leak anything important.

Relationship with Akamai

We did self-serve sales and that worked well.
Contacting their support was quick and easy. We never had sales calls or a dedicated manager with them.

Upgrading Akamai Cloud Computing

Yes - Upgrading servers normally requires downtime, but also cross-grading can be done seamlessly. Plan for downtime, execute migration (usually quick) and preferably have backups.
  • We purchased higher specs
  • Attached volume storage to increase space
