Overall Satisfaction with Altium 365

We mainly use Altium 365 for schematic capture and layout. We design radar, communications and sensor systems. We have experimented with some simulation tools however tend to find that people stick with the SPICE and signal integrity tools that they are used to using rather than using Altium 365.

We have a very strict symbol creation process using our own custom library.

Pros

  • Intuitive user interface
  • Lots of information and help available online
  • Feature-packed

Cons

  • There are a few bugs which are particularly annoying, such as sheet numbering
  • The component database is good, but I’ve found some symbols to be unreliable. Therefore we have to use a more inefficient internal process to check everything we use at least twice.
  • Software is very expensive
  • Negative due to the learning curve for our employees
  • Negative due to having to create a symbol creating and checking process using an access database
  • Positive now everyone is getting used to the tool, we are much more efficient
Mostly very intuitive. All of the functions are where I expect them to be, and if they’re not I can find out quickly with a google search.
Negative points are that you can’t always trust the manufacturer component search. The BoM has been a bit glitchy in places for us. Also my components sometimes ‘forget’ that I’ve set them as not fitted, which is strange.
Altium 365 is better, more modern and more feature-packed, hence why we chose to make the switch. As a consultancy, many of our clients expected us to use Altium 365 by default, so we have lost work in the past by only using PADS

Do you think Altium Develop delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Altium Develop's feature set?

Yes

Did Altium Develop live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Altium Develop go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy Altium Develop again?

Yes

It’s well suited for all schematic capture and layout applications that we have attempted so far. It seems to be particularly good for RF layouts, and the 3D mode is great for checking how circuit boards will fit together in the real world- helping to avoid mistakes.
The simulation software is less appropriate. If it was easier to use and ‘just worked’, I’m sure more of our staff would use it.
