Overall Satisfaction with Altium Designer

We use Altium Designer for both schematics and PCB layout. Also creating assembly drawings and BOMs sent to manufacturing. We plan to create scripts for automation in the future.

Pros

  • Schematic entry and PCB layout
  • Manufacturer part lookup with footprints
  • Assembly drawings

Cons

  • Assembly drawings for manual build process, separate drawings for each common part number.
  • Better scripting language such as Python
  • Being able to share designs without import and export has saved hours a week compared to other solutions.
  • With previous programs, differential pair matching rules for autorouting used to take a whole separate process and back and forth iteration, sometimes taking hours. Now this is done as part of the design.
  • Impedance control rules save about a half-hour per design and since it is built-in there is less reliance on 3rd party calculators.
I've switched from other software and the ability to make custom keymapping allows switching to be much smoother. Being able to configure windows and tabs custom to my workspace has made my job much more efficient.
Ability to export STEP models allows for seamless mechanical engineering integration. Also this feature allows for the designer to better anticipate any assembly difficulties either with hand assembly or reflow ovens.
