Overall Satisfaction with Azure Backup

Azure backup is in many different deployments and environments. We use it only for infrastructure in Azure. Azure backup is used for our customer environments as well as internal Azure environments. Azure backup addresses the need for a consistent and reliable backup solution in Azure that has the ability to snapshot/protect the entire VM.

Pros

  • Relatively quick backup times.
  • Protects the entire VM as well as file system/app consistent backups.

Cons

  • Restoring from Azure backup is a whole new VM deployment instead of just a VM restore.
  • Not as many metrics available for deep dive/analytics.
  • The ability to provide customers with peace of mind that their VM's are protected.
  • Low cost as you only pay for the storage.
  • Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery
When it comes to protecting VM's in Azure, Azure Backup is the way to go versus offerings from Commvault. If you only have the infrastructure in Azure, Azure Backup is the much more attractive solution because it's built into the product, offers ease of configuration, and ties in with the Azure infrastructure. If you only have an infrastructure in Azure, you do not have to pay additional costs for backup software.
As Azure Backup is a Microsoft product, you get support directly from Microsoft if the product is not working as intended. This is a benefit and a drawback at the same time. The benefit being that the product ties in with the Azure platform, drawback as Microsoft support is not always the easiest to work with, depending on the technician you are assigned.

Azure Backup is well suited for infrastructure in Azure. Azure backup is built into the platform and comes at no additional costs (you are charged for the storage, however), it is very easy to configure and get going. Azure backup is easy to work with when needing a restore and ties into the Azure platform really well.
