Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst Switches
I use these [Cisco Catalyst] switches at home and at the office, they are built like tanks and never die, even the old ones still work well and great to use. We are using them with VLANs and POE, most of the switches are using the newer versions of POE as well which can be quite expensive to get in a new switch but very affordable in an old Cisco.
Pros
- PoE.
- Reliability.
- Switching/networking.
- Feature rich.
Cons
- Old switches have unpatched vulnerabilities.
- New equipment is expensive.
- GUI would be nice in some cases.
- They are very reliable, rarely need replaced.
- They provide PoE power making installation of PoE devices simpler, no injectors required.
I wouldn't say we use any super advanced features on these but we are using VLANs and several of the basic features, we are happy with everything they do for us. Sometimes it would be nice if they had a GUI interface instead of just command line but the command line is good, I just have to look up commands sometimes.
I like Ubiquiti equipment a lot, they are more affordable than new Cisco, however, the old Cisco gear is so available and affordable it's hard to pass up. It has a great reseller market as well.
