Catalyst Switches are used as core and access switches for our local Networks. They build the fundamental access for all devices which are not wifi-based. The higher switch models are in the core function and the lower count model numbers are meant to be for the access to the network.
  • Network access
  • Speed
  • Interconnectivity
  • Bug fixing
  • More structured menu
  • More easy licensing
  • Pro: fast ROI
  • Pro: typical long living hardware.
  • Neg: sometimes bug fixing needed.
Customization and manageability of the switches are very great - each product comes with specific functions and/or feature sets. And the products can be customized ar the end customer needs them (if the products have all features needed). Also, you can easily find all specifications on the websites to check if the products fulfill all demands. Use APIs in conjunction with software development to make management easier or check the manufacturer's management portfolio which adds also in most cases a lot of benefits. But also a Command line-based management is easy to use - and you can customize the products according to your needs with it.

Catalyst switches are great if you want stable and reliable hardware that's also robust for your network backbone and access infrastructure. I guess the only reason not to get them is if you've only a small business with low demand for on-site ethernet access. Otherwise - for medium and bigger companies I would suggest trying out Catalyst Switches
