Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst Switches

We use Cisco Catalyst Switches as access level switches in our network. We need them to be resilient as we have a 24/7 operation at our company. When they go down, the business is guaranteed to lose money. Both loss in productivity as well as loss in product. We also use them as the platform for our WLC.

Pros

  • Packet Captures
  • Port level configuration

Cons

  • Ease of configuring for new network engineers
  • Faster upgrades to reduce downtime
  • Remove physical stacking
  • Positive - Great reliability IF you keep the software up to date
  • Negative - we have had various bugs where TAC could not give us a specific answer
  • Negative - Physical port stacking isn't good for upgrades as it takes down all production networks that surround the IDF
  • Webex Meetings
  • Webex Calling

Do you think Cisco Catalyst Switches delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Cisco Catalyst Switches's feature set?

Yes

Did Cisco Catalyst Switches live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Cisco Catalyst Switches go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Cisco Catalyst Switches again?

Yes

I think that Cisco Catalyst Switches do very well given the flexibility of configuration that you may apply. However, to new students/associates entering the field, it gives a slight learning curve in the more complex configuration and troubleshooting. Packet captures have very good options to apply when configuring the monitor.
