Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Nexus Dashboard
Our primary use of Nexus Dashboard was to implement Nexus Dashboard Orchestrator for data center to data center connectivity inside our ACI server distribution IP space with the multi-site capabilities. We initially used the platform to extend subnets from a legacy data center to a new data center location as part of migration efforts to close the legacy facility in preference for the new. This system allowed seamless network connectivity that helped all application migrations to be completed successfully. After this initial success, we activated a business recovery data center and implemented Nexus Dashboard Orchestrator multi-site services to that deployment as well. We are now easily able to have the same subnets active at both facilities within a full layer-3 framework allowing for easy application movement between the facilities.
Pros
- Provides multi-site services for ACI fabrics via Nexus Dashboard Orchestrator.
- A single management interface in Nexus Dashboard Orchestrator allows configuration deployments to multiple ACI fabrics.
- Nexus Dashboard offers flexibility for additional application developments like Nexus Dashboard Insights for ACI.
Cons
- There are still items required for proper configuration in ACI deployments that have to be done on the local fabric that Nexus Dashboard cannot yet deploy. This has not provided challenges other than knowing the limitations.
- The ease of our data center application migrations during our data center relocation was an immediate return to the business of this investment. It allowed for seamless application moves that could be addressed per application versus forcing all systems on a single subnet to migrate simultaneously.
- The multi-site capabilities have allowed us to deploy business recovery systems in a more simplified and cost effective manner.
We are in the process of deploying the full-stack visibility features of Nexus Dashboard into our ACI fabrics. Our desire for this is to not only have the traffic and system visibility but also to have controls for change management testing/verification and system upgrade planning. As our data center needs continue to grow, this platform can give us the confidence we need for effective system management.
As back end technologies continue to advance and offer extended solutions, the navigation and interaction with those systems can be challenging. This is especially challenging with small operational teams. A single pane application like Nexus Dashboard can help with not only simplification of access to these technologies but also offers a unified view that assists with navigation and task implementation.
