Overall Satisfaction with Cisco UCS X-Series

We are using it as compute nodes for telecommunications workloads in PoPs and data centers. We use it to run virtual machines on VMware, bare metal installs for specific high performance use cases and general work loads based on Linux mostly. It solves the problems of configuration drift throughout the PoPs and data centers.

Pros

  • Easy configuration
  • Reliability
  • Flexibility
  • Compatibility

Cons

  • More support for additional, non standard add on cards
  • Easier Intersight templating
  • Easier automation of day2 operations, like installing Virtualization or bare metal OSes
  • Good long term investment
  • Providing the option to upgrade to better blades later in the process
  • CAPEX is quite high for initial costs
We decided to go with the UCS X-Series as it is easy to integrate. The engineers are familiar with it. The Partner network is good and we have good external engineers to help us with problems and integration questions. It is a flexible solution that can help us fulfill the requirements for years to come.
We have much faster deployment times with the standardized configuration approach. We can automate things more easily as we are always buying and building the same hardware stack. We use certified setups which provide predetermined results.
We can ship stuff to the site without having to build it up and configure it in the lab before. We are still missing the end-2-end automation procedures, but we are already working on it. We need less remote hands help in case of problems and can usually solve them on our own.
We upgraded the blades through multiple generations, we increased the throughput, we included new and old setups. We expanded the existing environment with new and better CPUs, implemented iSCSI boot and full achieved full independence of the underlying hardware layer
