Overall Satisfaction with F5 BIG-IP

We use F5 BIG-IP for typical load-balancer scenarios currently

Pros

  • Priority Group activation allows for redirection of traffic when primary nodes are taken offline for patching/upgrades
  • iRules are extremely flexible allowing us to collect traffic stats that we can forward on to our customers
  • The APM module allows us to extend functionality for step-up authentication via client certificates

Cons

  • The REST API integration for APM is nearly non-existent
  • The clientSSL / serverSSL profiles are implemented with differently making automation a little more cumbersome
  • Metric availability and KPIs are difficult to provide trending history which we hope may be resolved with the recently announced AST module
  • The fact we've been using for nearly 20 years I believe speaks to the ROI we feel it brings.
Nearly everything I can do from the web admin UI can also be done via REST API which integrates into CI/CD delivery pipelines.
