Overall Satisfaction with Google Cloud Storage
Google Cloud Storage is the main data hub for my work. For my specific work I use it to store CSV and parquets generated by user natural language query. With a storage policy we clean the buckets periodically to remove data that are not accessed frequently. Google Cloud Storage is easy to work with and when working with other services in GCP the integration is seamless.
Pros
- Easy access with CLI tool
- Easy to understand permission and policies
- Intiutive UI in console
Cons
- Sometime when deleting large amount of data, the progress is unclear
- Changing bucket level permissions are sometimes unclear
- The intial policy setting and learning curve was steep
- It reduced monthly data retention costs by 40% by utilizing Lifecycle Management
- It decreased data retrieval times for analytics by 50%
- Eliminated a lot in upfront server hardware purchases by switching to a pay-as-you-go cloud model
- Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) and Azure Blob Storage
We chose Google Cloud Storage for its superior integration with BigQuery and AI/ML tools. Unlike AWS S3’s complex tiering or Azure’s offline archive, Google Cloud Storage offers millisecond access even for archival classes. This simplified our architecture while providing the high-throughput performance needed for our real-time analytics pipelines. It's just better.
