Overall Satisfaction with IBM Cloud Object Storage
This service is being used exclusively within the Computing department at the university. It is being used as an alternative to students accessing machines in person as we have students that work remotely. This significantly reduces our outgoings on high end technology as we don't need to have 300+ machines with high end specifications.
Pros
- Runs without delay
- Processes large amounts of data quickly
- Accessible for users of different technical levels
Cons
- The UI and layout of applied storage should be simplified.
- Commercial rates should be easier to quote.
- Helped meet teaching requirements/ goals on a temporary basis.
- Helped introduce the idea of SaaS to students.
- Gave us an opportunity to scale modules as we are less reliant on top quality hardware.

IBM Cloud Object Storage (IBM COS) and Google Cloud Storage both offer large scale storage solutions for a variety of different needs. Whilst Google Cloud Storage is able to update files quicker than competing cloud storage providers such as IBM Cloud Object Storage, IBM Cloud Object Storage has a much more diverse set of features that were more relevant for the work I was doing. It provides dynamic scaling, elastic load balancing, and a variety of monitoring tools which were essential for my data science project at the time.
