Overall Satisfaction with IBM Cloud Object Storage

This service is being used exclusively within the Computing department at the university. It is being used as an alternative to students accessing machines in person as we have students that work remotely. This significantly reduces our outgoings on high end technology as we don't need to have 300+ machines with high end specifications.
  • Runs without delay
  • Processes large amounts of data quickly
  • Accessible for users of different technical levels
  • The UI and layout of applied storage should be simplified.
  • Commercial rates should be easier to quote.
  • Helped meet teaching requirements/ goals on a temporary basis.
  • Helped introduce the idea of SaaS to students.
  • Gave us an opportunity to scale modules as we are less reliant on top quality hardware.
As we teach modules related to front end development and server side maintenance, this service has been very beneficial. Students have been able to utilize this service as a cloud storage solution for a variety of projects that they have worked on. This provides a secure and flexible storage solution which prevents the issues associated with localized storage.
The process of transferring data is quite smooth and generally seems to operate at a fast speed. So far I haven't experienced any major loss balancing issues when transferring data, with the exception of a few glitches which may have been related to the universities internal network. My understanding/ use of IBM Aspera is limited though.
Having a variety of storage options based on their frequency of use has been very beneficial for us from a budgeting perspective, as well as management.

Would you buy IBM Cloud Object Storage again?

Yes

IBM Cloud Object Storage (IBM COS) and Google Cloud Storage both offer large scale storage solutions for a variety of different needs. Whilst Google Cloud Storage is able to update files quicker than competing cloud storage providers such as IBM Cloud Object Storage, IBM Cloud Object Storage has a much more diverse set of features that were more relevant for the work I was doing. It provides dynamic scaling, elastic load balancing, and a variety of monitoring tools which were essential for my data science project at the time.
  • IBM Cloud Activity Tracker
We utilized the IBM Cloud Activity Tracker (CAT) in conjunction with IBM Cloud Object Storage (IBM COS) so that students would have the opportunity to measure and record their metrics during data science processing. As this is another IBM product, IBM Cloud Activity Tracker and many other services they offer work seamlessly with one another. This meant that students could rapidly switch between modifying and manipulating data within IBM Cloud Object Storage and then being able to instantly analyze any actions they had taken on the cloud.
[A specific scenario where IBM Cloud Object Storage is well suited would be] as a replacement for any in-person processing that needs to be done. This could be anything from training a neural network down to setting up a backend for a CRUD system. It is less useful for quick projects that are more driven by time rather than long term investment into developing a secure bespoke system.
