Overall Satisfaction with IBM Power

It's used both on the production floor for manufacturing as well as handling all finance. It's integrated throughout the enterprise from a dedicated client website to handling EDI to controlling production batches.
  • Batch Reports.
  • Security.
  • Rock solid hardware that never goes down.
  • Better visuals on the admin site.
  • System Navigator doesn't handle network issues well (suspect java issue).
  • Better literature for top executives to appreciate multi-core licensing.
  • Consistent uptime.
  • Toolset developed over 35 years, hardware upgrades are as easy as they get. We literally have programs developed in 1986 that have not been modified since - they compile without issue today.
Business continuity and a long relationship with the software vendor made selecting IBM POWER the natural choice. We weren't looking for the latest and greatest fancy gadgetry. We wanted proven solutions with proven hardware with a company that consistently stands behind its product.

When the expectations are well thought out and consistent, COBOL is a fantastic choice to use, and what better hardware than IBM. In the 8 years I used POWER hardware, I never once had unexpected downtime. Its ability to process massive amounts of data in seconds always astonished me. That being said, the POWER platform is not well suited to a shop that is working on figuring out what it wants. The POWER platform has a high initial investment cost that pays out immediately after day 1 of successful implementation. But a shop that doesn't know what they're doing will spend their entire time retooling.
