Overall Satisfaction with IBM Power

IBM Power Systems was used to handle our data warehouse ETL computing systems. Our extract transform and load systems used the compute available in IBM Power to process our data into the warehouse. Several other functions exist too, like our mainframe systems run on Power, and much of our transactional data is processed on IBM Power Systems.
  • Fast.
  • Well integrated.
  • Reliable.
  • Difficult to scale.
  • Costly.
  • Difficult to administer.
  • Handled increasing data loads very well, so we got good return on the usage.
  • Dependence upon Power tied us too directly to IBM, so we have tried to move off them to Linux and VM based servers, easier to scale, less costly.
  • Pay for compute that your not using, so it's costly.
I did not select IBM Power Systems. It was decided prior to my employment; however, we did change our systems from AIX Power to VMs. This allowed for cheaper and easier scaling of our systems to handle the increased workloads for our business. Our IT management felt it was a better route.
IBM Power Systems is a good fit for processing lots of structured data and storing in a traditional IT framework. The servers were able to compute large files without struggle, and these systems provided excellent resources to our company's business processes, including moving and transferring large data extracts to various entities.
