Overall Satisfaction with IBM Power Systems Virtual Server

In a dynamic and ever changing environment, we rely on the stability and flexibility of IBM Power Systems' environment to deploy and run our workloads at speed and scale.

Pros

  • Provides us the ability to quickly provision workloads.
  • Provides the flexibility to allow targeted groups to control their resources.
  • Allows us to run multiple operating environments on the same infrastructure.

Cons

  • Configuration interface could use a refresh.
  • When compared to commodity hardware the long term ROI is better.
  • There is support for platforms that cannot be easily replicated on x86.
  • Our teams have the flexibility to build what they need, when they need it.
We also utilize a private x86 cloud infrastructure for other targeted workloads. We derive great value from the IBM offering but like many other heterogeneous enterprises we utilize a mix of systems and information technologies.

Virtual Server is well suited to support companies that are transitioning workloads from more "legacy" architectures to common operating systems. High performance linux with a greater ROI than x86 systems gives a transition step from other environments. We mostly see this happening based upon the loss of long term skill sets that have to be replaced with new individuals that are not proficient in the other architectures.
