Overall Satisfaction with Intermapper
We use Intermapper in the Information Systems department to monitor our infrastructure for our entire organization. It is a relatively inexpensive and easy to use tool for the monitoring and notification of critical infrastructures status and availability. We keep it running on all our desktops and on a TV in the office to assess the availability of all our switches, virtual servers, and other critical infrastructure devices. It uses visible, audible, and email alerts to notify of problems.
Pros
- The interface makes it very easy to add devices to monitor.
- You can set custom threshold for the alerts to different levels per device. This allows you to set critical infrastructure to easily alert at lower thresholds.
- You can customize the way the devices are displayed and the size of the interface. This make it easy to put in tight spots on your 2nd or 3rd monitor.
- You can divide your devices by type into separate maps and show inter-connectivity of devices.
Cons
- We would like to see a little more flexibility in the graphics choices for the display of the items. You can change the symbols, but changing background colors of the symbols without changing the entire symbol would be nice.
- Monitoring software doesn't really provide a direct ROI and at the beginning would have to be considered negative.
- Where the positive aspect kicks in is in reduced outage times. Slow response to outages is obviously costing the affected department lost manpower.
- Also, quicker responses add credibility to the IT departments perceived competence. When we contact an end user about an outage they don't even realize they are having, it sheds a positive light on our preparedness and capabilities.
We have been using Intermapper for years and have been satisfied with it to the point that we haven't looked at competitors. The maintenance cost is very low and the product does exactly what we expect and need it to do. The product has gone through a couple owner transitions and still is a effective and when we first procured it.
