Because Joomla! is constantly maintained and updated the code remains robust, efficient, and secured. The versatility of this platform makes it ideal for small businesses and those needing capabilities above many Wordpress sites.

Evaluation and Selection

Switched from older versions starting at version 1.5.
Also considered Wordpress and Drupal. Wordpress was deemed to blog-oriented and didn't provide enough functionality and scalability needed. Drupal demanded too high a learning curve and would've delayed starting the project by too great an amount.

Implementation

We ultimately made several custom tweaks to the underlying PHP code, the engine of Joomla!, to fit our business needs, in addition to adding third-party plugins and components (as is the norm).

There is a little bit of a learning curve to acquaint oneself with the Joomla! back-end admin panel, and to understand its methodologies and terminology.

Some technical background is preferable, but not crucial.

While there is no central support for the Joomla! core platform, there are official user forums. Across the Web are also many unofficial support forums for Joomla! users.
