One Tool for Web, Mobile, API and Desktop Testing!

Overall Satisfaction with Katalon Studio

Katalon Studio is one of the automation tools used in my organization. It is used to automate our web and mobile applications. In our company, it is heavily used for UI and API automation but the tool can be used for image comparison too. The tool supports all different kinds of browsers like Google Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox, headless browsers, etc. The tool can be easily integrated with Jenkins, JIRA, GitHub, Qtest, etc. It's a nice stable tool for automation that uses groovy scripting language.

  • Katalon recorder available. Newbies can play around and easily write test cases.
  • Integration with CI/CD workflows like JIRA, Jenkins, qTest, Slack, etc.
  • Supports cross browser testing.
  • Katalon analytics is available to analyze script failures.
  • Katalon Studio supports only grovvy language for now. It will be nice to see support for other scripting languages.
  • Performance issues; sudden crash of the tool.
  • Debug button is provided only to licensed owner since Katalon 7+ version.
  • New tool, few resources available to learn. So there is a mild learning curve here.
  • Single tool for Web, Mobile and API automation
  • Easy CI/CD integration
  • Comes with Katalon Analytics which helps to analyze script failures and fix accordingly.
  • New tool, small community and not open sourced.
  • Performance issues; but the Katalon community is quick enough to fix in their future versions.
My company was using selenium until we shifted to Katalon Studio. The transition was pretty easy as this tool is built on top of selenium frameworks. Since the companies application grew from web to mobile, glad to have a single automation tool for all different testings. The team did have a mild learning curve here but it was fairly easy for everyone to pick it up. The Katalon community support is good as they do reply to your queries and fix the issues reported quickly. Overall, it has been a positive experience using this tool.

One can easily automate Web, Mobile, Desktop, API (SOAP as well as REST), and execute the scripts on your desired browser/platform. The record and play option is available so users can use their recorder to record the xpath/objects or can write their own xpath. I would say the reorder is not so great for angular pages where there are no unique locators but it is easy to write their own xpath in this case. For API testing, there is an easy way to import from swagger, WSDL, etc. The tool can be easily integrated with CI/CD. All in all, a good tool for automation.
