Overall Satisfaction with Linode

We are using Linode to host three of our services we are offering. - Wordpress one-click installation - Accounting + POS Java application backend - Managed DB for the POS The accounting application is mostly used internally. At the moment we just have one person managing the Linode accounts, while several people have access to the servers by SSH.
  • Cheap and reliable virtual servers
  • Very easy and simple interface
  • Transparent pricing
  • Easy to use and install things
  • Managed DBs
  • Adapting the interface to mobile devices
  • Ability to access servers from the interface--it is a bit unclear how it works
  • More fine-grained control over Managed DB, e.g. logging
  • Getting invoice in email instead of having to access the web interface every time
  • Reduced cost
  • Increased reliability from old provider
  • Reduced overhead cost
  • Less need of support
We built some applications on Google App Engine, and in comparison to Linode, you are more locked in and there is a steeper learning curve, as you have to adapt to Google's tools. In Linode, you can use whatever you are used to. With AWS, you are able to make whatever setup you want but the pricing is a complete mystery and the interface is very hard to learn and get used to. It is true that if you have a very complex setup and many people working, you might find it hard to get everything you need from Linode.
I haven't needed support many times, but every time I had support, the response has been quick and good.

They create automated support tickets for planned maintenance that will affect you and this has worked out very well for us. We never had to intervenen in any of these circumstances.
We are using some very lightweight front-end applications, and with Linode, we are able to run that at a very low cost. At our previous provider, we had to have more hardware for the same type of application, which resulted in a higher cost. Compared to our earlier provider, the reliability is great.
We have also decided to move to a Managed DB which has reduced the time of maintenance considreably.
Uptime is important and Linode have given us really good reliability. However, the most valuable part is that most of the downtimes we have are automatic and there is no need for us to intervene--that is priceless. The uptime of the managed DB:s is really good as well, no problems so far.

Do you think Linode delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Linode's feature set?

Yes

Did Linode live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Linode go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Linode again?

Yes

Linode is well suited when you want to get a virtual server up and running very quickly. It is also very beneficial for services that require a small amount of resources and can reduce your costs. I haven't tried out load balancers or firewalls too much, but seeing the options in the interface, it might be hard to create a complete infrastructure for a complex setup. One of the strenghts of Linode, compared to e.g. AWS, is the ease of use. In AWS you have to learn a lot of keywords and configurations while Linode is more easy for the user.
