Overall Satisfaction with Linode
We are using Linode to host three of our services we are offering. - Wordpress one-click installation - Accounting + POS Java application backend - Managed DB for the POS The accounting application is mostly used internally. At the moment we just have one person managing the Linode accounts, while several people have access to the servers by SSH.
Pros
- Cheap and reliable virtual servers
- Very easy and simple interface
- Transparent pricing
- Easy to use and install things
- Managed DBs
Cons
- Adapting the interface to mobile devices
- Ability to access servers from the interface--it is a bit unclear how it works
- More fine-grained control over Managed DB, e.g. logging
- Getting invoice in email instead of having to access the web interface every time
- Reduced cost
- Increased reliability from old provider
- Reduced overhead cost
- Less need of support
We built some applications on Google App Engine, and in comparison to Linode, you are more locked in and there is a steeper learning curve, as you have to adapt to Google's tools. In Linode, you can use whatever you are used to. With AWS, you are able to make whatever setup you want but the pricing is a complete mystery and the interface is very hard to learn and get used to. It is true that if you have a very complex setup and many people working, you might find it hard to get everything you need from Linode.
