Overall Satisfaction with Linode

Our main use of Linode is proof of concept testing. Because Linode bills only for the exact amount of use time of a virtual machine, plus makes it very user friendly and fast to configure, and has a lot of interesting "Marketplace" applications, it can be very easy and cheap to setup an entire test environment, try it out for a few days and delete it, only being billed for used hours.
  • Configuring new VMs
  • Simple billing model
  • Managing VM security
  • More backup options would be useful for production environments.
  • An even larger range of Marketplace applications would be good.
  • I don't have hard numbers. But I can say we've tested at least half a dozen different technologies/platforms that we wouldn't have bothered with if it weren't so easy/cheap and that of those, we make active use of two.
The Linode interface is just vastly better, easier, more responsive. Pricing overall is similar, but Linode is better for short term testing.

I would probably recommend OVH for cheap, unlimited bandwidth servers. But for anything else, I'd go with Linode.
Only used their support once. They were a bit slower than I would have liked, but were able to help effectively once they responded.
A lot of the time our Linode account sits empty, and we pay nothing. Then when we want to test something, we can spin up several VMs that in some cases would cost thousands with other providers paying on a monthly basis, but instead we configure them, test then in a day or two and delete. Very cost effective for short term trials.

Otherwise for longer term use, I'd say it is competitive, but nothing particularly special cost wise.
We've never had a Linode outage. But we also don't use it for anything critical, almost entirely trials. We have used it for minor production servers for a couple of months at a time, but not with anything particularly important. We never had a problem though.

For setting up test/proof of concept environments, Linode is outstanding. I haven't found an alternative where configuration is nearly as simple, and the fact you get billed based on exact usage means you can test a system that costs $1000 a month, and only pay for a single day's use of it.

If large/unlimited bandwidth is needed, other providers are better. But I find Linode generally also offers better performance within its bandwidth limits.

And while the automatic backup system is very limited, it is also very useful, cheap and easy to use in some specific scenarios.
