  • Navigate large sets of data with ease.
  • Process data quickly.
  • Build templated reports that are useful to senior management.
  • Limited flexibility to edit data connections / data behind application on the fly.
  • Not the most user-friendly GUI.
  • Locked down application without some of the "open" benefits of an application like Tableau.
  • Replaced many tedious reports that were built in Excel with data exports.
  • Reduced errors and provided efficiencies.
  • Allowed us to repurpose reports across regions/countries.
I would see Business Objects as the main competitor to MSTR in the way we used the tool. I wouldn't see a reason to go through a change considering the level of effort the lack of significant differences between the two tools. For a smaller implementation I would strongly consider Tableau, however.
I would really try to understand what the colleague is looking to gain out of the tool. For example - things I'd suggest they ask themselves first and then their prospective vendors would include:

  • Do you want to be able to bring in data on the fly, easily, or do you want to be limited to what lives in your data warehouse

  • Do you want to be able to develop quick ad-hoc reports & insights, or are pre-built reports more important to you

  • Is cost a main concern? Do you need to tie ROI to this tool in order to get funding?
