Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Mimecast Advanced Email Security as our email gateway for incoming and outgoing emails for all emails associated with our organization. Mimecast Advanced Email Security has helped us reduce the number of Phishing, malicious and spam related emails. We also use this service to manage our user signatures in emails.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Filtering marketing and sales emails to a seperate category so they don't fill up the inbox
Provides a user friendly dashboard to visualize email flow and why decisions were made on different emails

Cons

O365 implementation wasn't available when we implemented. MX record implementation was not smooth

Return on Investment

Reduced time spent running down email investigation
Our org size hasn't changed but every year we need to "add more licenses"

Usability

Dashboard is well made. Policy editor has a bit of a learning curve

Ease of Integration

When we implemented there was no o365 api support, integration took a week.of break/fix before email flow was normal

Microsoft Defender for Office 365

Less customizable than Mimecast Advanced Email Security. Less policy options

Stable and reliable. Never had an outage in 5 years. Most Phishing and dangerous emails are caught. Personalized Phishing from trusted email domains lik Gmail still get through often. URL scanning and attachment scanning works well.
