Overall Satisfaction with Oracle SQL Developer

Oracle SQL Developer is our go-to application when needing to run quick queries against Oracle, get a quick overview of our schema, extract various DDL components, and other basic Oracle functionalities. We have never used it to do any Oracle DB Management or the like, preferring to go command line in these instances.
  • Build and analyze SQL.
  • Extract DDL.
  • Provides a quick overview of the Schema Structure.
  • Clunky, could use some basic UI improvements.
  • Returns only 100 lines at a time when querying DB.
  • Basic Oracle management functionality would be nice (check sizes of tablespaces, etc).
  • It is free, so ROI is a bit meaningless here.
  • It is easy to use, easy to configure, and therefore easy to show people.
DBArtisan is the elephant in the room for a number of reasons. It not only does everything SQL Developer does, but it also has a huge number of management functions built-in. However, it is immensely expensive and, for your average developer, way overkill.
Squirrel is also a great tool, and free like SQL Developer. I would say that Squirrel is likely a better choice if you have never used any Database IDE and have multiple databases to manage only because you will have a single tool to manage multiple DBs.
If Oracle is all you need to manage, and you are a developer, SQL Developer is ideal. It is simple, it is free, and it works perfectly with Oracle.

Yes

Did Oracle SQL Developer live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Yes

Would you buy Oracle SQL Developer again?

Yes

For software development purposes, Oracle SQL Developer is great. It quickly connects to an Oracle instance and allows developers to test their SQL quickly and efficiently. Likewise, when trying to replicate various database structures, the ability to retrieve the DDL is also very useful.
