Overall Satisfaction with PitchBook
I use Pitchbook to pull public company information for comps analysis. I also pull financial information, which has improved significantly over the years that I have used Pitchbook across organizations. I also use the platform for investor research for sell-side transactions. Another incredibly powerful tool that I recently discovered is extracting lists of co-investors when looking at a specific investor. Although it is limited to VCs, I think its great especially when I have identified an investor that is considered a top tier investor (likely to be interested) for a mandate.
Finally, the part that I use the most is the excel plug-in. This is huge to streamline work. However! I am running into issues where this plug-in is significantly slowing down excel. Even switching between excel windows causes a massive lag which in investment banking, leads to a lot of time drained.

Pros
- investor research
- public company research
- excel plug-in (with a caveat)
Cons
- excel plug-in: significantly slowing down excel
- comps analysis: a lot of times the companies are not as comparable as I would like even when narrowing down the scope and identifiable traits
- Investor profiles, specifically recent acquisitions. A great tool or feature would be able to pull recent acquisitions or portfolio companies that match industry, size, or other criteria. For example, if I am looking for funds or investors that invest in defense hardware due to a capital raise mandate, then Pitchbook can narrow down companies in that sector.
- Workflow improvements
- time saved
- template improvements
- single source of information
Our firm uses Pitchbook primarily to source and qualify potential investors for sell-side mandates. We rely on its private market data to understand fund strategies, check prior deal activity, and map relevant portfolio exposure. Overall, the data quality holds up well for screening and directional analysis, though we routinely verify details through firm websites and direct outreach.
I’ve used or evaluated tools like Macabacus and Grata. Macabacus is stronger than Pitchbook in Excel and PowerPoint workflow enhancements, which are critical for banking productivity. However, Pitchbook is far superior to Grata due to its richer public company information, access to filings, stronger comparables data, and its Excel plug-in, which Grata lacks. Overall, each tool serves a different purpose, but Pitchbook provides the most comprehensive data coverage.
