Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

Red Hat is used for a large number of general purpose workloads, application servers, web servers and other use case. It is a backbone of the company.

Pros

  • Stability - servers need little aside from routine upkeep
  • Ease of automated deployment
  • Automation tasks when used.

Cons

  • Upgrade process, though this was addressed in RHEL 7 --> 8 there is room for improvement.
  • Availability of documentation. Keeping the RH knowledge base behind a paywall has hurt adaptation by younger future users/admins/
  • Ease of signup for developer programs, you often have to dig to find it and they are not well known among younger and future admins
  • The last negative impact was the post IBM changes to RH Satellite licensing.
  • Low cost of deployment has always served us well.
Nothing is perfect, you will have to be happy with a 9 :)
