Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

We use close to 100 Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) servers in our Org and are primarily used make certain product deployment and configuration easier. For example, we have observed the PostgreSQL database performance on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)is a lot better than other operating systems. Also the in-built volume manager and ext file system are easy to configure and setup. This is just one example, but in certain deployments, this is the best platform.

Pros

  • Easy to setup OS with one of the best volume manager and FS
  • Best performance for certain databases
  • Less vulnerabilities and secure
  • Minimal CPU and memory usage for the OS

Cons

  • Steps to setup volumes and ext FS can be done easier
  • Rescan new disks or the extended disks can be made easier
  • Few features can be integrated in a wizard based format to make new users easy
  • License modeling can be made easier
  • The negative impact is the license management and the cost
  • Wish the cost of license was more affordable and then it would allow us more deployments
  • Positives definitely are less maintenance and less security concerns
There is definitely scope for more better usability. As mentioned in my earlier comments, for a fresher or new joinee, there is a learning curve for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Specially the new generation, which are so used to using window or wizard based format to setup everything, find it difficult to use command lines.
For me, the cmd line is the best and easy to use.
Sun Microsystems was the best but a decades ago and since then I have used Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for few of the production deployments and so have found this to be best. As mentioned earlier, the best is the security of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and the light weight that it is, makes it a best choice for setup and configuration.
