Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
we use Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for applications that require upmost stability, fast restart times, and the least amount of change that would normally require an administrative interface. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) also offer a very small footprint, which means less compute and resources to meet minimum Operating System requirements. A added bonus of the small footprint OS is a small attack surface from a Cyber Security Perspective
Pros
- Fast Reboot
- minimal hardware requirements
- stability
- no impact of low up time as other operating systems would normally struggle with
Cons
- viewing overall system performance
- increasing the disk space size of partitions
- assigning and changing file and folder permissions can be difficult
- extremely fast patch time and procedures save personnel resource time
- extremely fast reboot time post kernel updates reduces application down time
- minimal hardware specs reduces cost and allows hardware to be allocated to other virtual machines
Windows Server can take a long time to patch, waiting for the patch to install, then waiting to apply, after the OS is rebooted it can also take additional time to apply the update. Often times Windows Server patches can fail, leading to long troubleshooting times and application outages.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Patching is extremely quick, I've honestly not seen a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) update fail to install in many years of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) patching.
