Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat OpenShift

Used to host container workloads across the entire organization. Use cases vary from maintaining and monitoring hardware and virtual cloud resources to hosting web applications for end user business needs, as well as developing and testing new applications or prototyping. OpenShift provides a starting point as a platform for all end users in the organization.

Pros

  • Provides developer friendly features for on boarding
  • Keeps applications running and resilent
  • Also customers to build k8s native tooling for their applications

Cons

  • Easier onboarding to end users new to containers
  • Self describing or documenting deployments for those inheriting workloads
  • Providing some basic troubleshooting guidance for users
  • Surfacing vulnerability information to end users more easily
  • Decreased downtime
  • Increased security posture
  • Decreased time to market
I think that if users are suitable skilled in Kubernetes practices and familiar enough with the concepts they can take full advantage of the suite of dev tools available. The initial onboarding is a pain point as many fresh developers don’t even know where to start or where to go to find this information. Some of this may be solved with newer tools that we have yet to implement.
We’ve deployed OpenShift on premises for a number of years and over the past 4 years we’ve begun deploying in cloud environments as well.

Do you think Red Hat OpenShift delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Red Hat OpenShift's feature set?

Yes

Did Red Hat OpenShift live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Red Hat OpenShift go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Red Hat OpenShift again?

Yes

Best used for centralized operations when governance and security are top of mind, and a large skill gap exists with end users or business owners that like to try things out (i.e when you need to provide a safe space for customers to prototype). Perhaps less suited for cases where customers just want to write and execute code that doesn’t require the full suite of kubernetes orchestration.
