Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat OpenShift
We use for deploy of the internal systems of ours university, the majority of them are internal system for the administrative workload, but some have education propose, the biggest problem right know is that we cant use odf for all system data, because for or backup solutions dont support it, so we use nfs for this, and nfs has same delays that impact on the development flow.
Pros
- really resilient system, we had some serious problems and most of the time we had zero downtime or just a minor one on the production systems.
- after the gitops workflow as finished, it was really easy and fast to deploy new systems
- as we finished the deployment processes for the dev team, if some system need some custom config ou changes, it really easy do it, as all this process is controlled via IaC
Cons
- the search on docs most of the times bring the right words, but wont fix the problem, and some random KB no exactly on the same topic, has the correct answer needed
- Some problems are not so clear to find, the error occur on another pod/operators and you have to dig it to understand
- First the negative for us, the dev team start to have a lot of more work because now the can see theirs containers, logs, pipelines, code security flaws, but its not exactly a problem, but the intend thing to happen. Also for then, now they have a lot more access to the application (container, logs, metrics, pipeline), before that all this was handled we the infra team, as for the infra team, we could automated a lot of work, and focus on better process of the dev workflow. Because we arent a profit organization, we dint had a significant impact on finances, just on the worked done, and future proofing our systems, getting better devs practices, etc
So for our process, we use IaC ,gitlabcicd and argocd for the workflow, every thing that had a certified operator we prefer, before that jenkins are used with some manual process to create and destroy the project, but now every thing is done by a click of the developer on internal system, it create dev, stage and prod system, configure all the internal process for F5 (like allow or block dev/stage from outside), a entry for every env its create on keycloak with all the system credentials, that after are mounted for the system use it, so after one click the dev is ready to start the development.
We just use Red Hat OpenShift on premise for now
