Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat OpenShift
I am on the container infrastructure engineering team. I deploy the core components for application development teams. Red Hat OpenShift allows us to quickly spin up cluster for our app teams. The scope is provisioning, maintaining, and upgrading Red Hat OpenShift clusters. We are currently using Red Hat OpenShift on premise but intend to also use ROSA for aws.
Pros
- Single Pane of Glass in Console
- Operators / Subscriptions
- Security
Cons
- Policies
- CI/CD
- Upgrades
- Integration with LDAP / Oauth
- Cost savings with HCP
- Increased security to opensource K8S
Red Hat OpenShift has streamlined our process through using Red Hat OpenShift gitops and Red Hat OpenShift pipelines. I appreciate the ability to install these features through the operators. We currently use tekton to build applications containers and argocd to deploy them to Red Hat OpenShift.
We have leveraged Hosted Control Planes to attempt to provide consistent infrastructure accross our environments. This allows us to just provision worker nodes that can be shared across our clusters. Additionally we are leveraging ansible to automation.
- Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS)
Red Hat OpenShift has a better security posture than EKS. I enjoy the console on Red Hat OpenShift more as well. I believe there is greater observability for Red Hat OpenShift.
