Overall Satisfaction with SAP Build

We mainly use SAP Build for developing POCs for our end clients. Those use cases tend to exist of simple apps meant to extend cloud products such as SAP S/4HANA and Sales/Service Cloud, as well as automate approval workflows to manage data processes (e.g., creation of Business Partners, Products, ...). Additionally, we've performed limited tests for RPA processes to help streamline repetitive tasks.

Pros

  • Great tool for rapid prototyping
  • Potential for citizen developers (although currently in practice still need a lot of input for most scenarios from more technical colleagues)
  • Decent integration with the SAP ecosystem

Cons

  • Workflow automation is still limited, especially when it comes to presenting forms dynamically for _much_ increased user-friendliness (and thus higher end user adoption)
  • Pro-code tool should be more readily accessible in order to cover more use cases
  • Monitoring and logging, especially division between technical and non-technical errors and how they get presented to relevant end users
  • SAP Build has allowed us to quickly recreate an on-premise legacy software with minimal effort, enabling the customer to not only migrate a crucial process to the cloud but also automate and improve many of its steps.
  • RPA has allowed us to automate much of the order processing coming in via email for one of our customers, significantly reducing manual effort and minimizing errors.
  • SAP Build has helped us secure several implementation projects by reducing development effort, enabling a positive ROI within acceptable timeframes for decision-makers.
We have successfully integrated both SAP Build applications and our custom workflow forms with S/4HANA on-premises through data exchange mechanisms, as well as with Sales and Service Cloud version 2 using embedding and mash-up techniques. As the latter does not allow any direct customizing (unlike version 1), this accessible option for extending the core product has allowed us to convince a customer to become an early adopter of that new cloud technology.
We have helped streamline and implement a custom workflow to create business partners that has replaced the traditional back-and-forth emailing between departments, which often resulted in multiple sources of truth. This new centralized, combined creation-and-approval flow gathers input from key users at relevant stages of the creation process, ensuring a more efficient and organized approach.
While coding experience may not be strictly necessary for creating very basic flows or applications, having strong logical thinking and an understanding of how the underlying data is structured is still essential. In our experience, while functional colleagues are often able to put together a proof of concept or a rough skeleton, technical colleagues can still contribute a lot by thinking through possible edge cases and ensuring efficiency and robustness. A close collaboration between the domains is strongly recommended.

Do you think SAP Build delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with SAP Build's feature set?

Yes

Did SAP Build live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of SAP Build go as expected?

No

Would you buy SAP Build again?

Yes

For basic forms and processes or to quickly iterate on an idea or Proof of Concept, SAP Build can help quickly collect data from a fictional end user, and perform basic data fetches and updates with simple logic. However, for more complex requirements, it is not currently the right tool.

SAP Build is a more mature tool for application development. The challenge is less about implementing simple use cases or designs but rather how to embed the application into another solution. As a stand-alone app, it generally performs well for basic needs.

RPA (Robotic Process Automation) can be powerful when it works, but it can be quite difficult to debug if things don't go right from the start. It’s definitely worth exploring and evaluating to determine if there will be a good return on investment (ROI) for a specific use case.
