Overall Satisfaction with SQL Sentry Performance Advisor

We use SQL Sentry Performance Advisor to monitor and tune our production SQL Server environment. It has helped us address numerous performance issues with our ERP and CRM SQL Server databases including excessive blocking and deadlocks. From a user perspective, this meant the systems felt slow or was unusable during our busiest times. It also meant failed transactions. SQL Sentry allowed us to pinpoint the culprits, make the change and monitor the results of those changes. SQL Sentry has provided visibility into our SQL Server solutions that we did not have before.

Pros

  • Allows you to take a period in time and review everything that was going on in that time period.
  • Provides great visuals to help us understand the performance of our SQL Server at a glance.
  • The alerts are flexible and we can customize them to our needs.

Cons

  • While the interface looks great, it would be nice to see an upgrade. Navigating around the system can be cumbersome at times.
  • A mobile app or web portal to SQL Sentry would make it easy to check in on the server from anywhere.
I have evaluated RedGate SQL Monitor but did not go with that solution because I found the interface to be less intuitive and the tools less mature than SQL Sentry.
We have a 32-bit install of SQL Server 2008 and we have not been able to get SQL Sentry to work with that database.

    Hello, We are so glad to hear that SQL Sentry has helped to monitor and improve your environment. It is a great feeling when we see that we are able to help not only our users, but also the customers of our users. I did want to mention, that with the release of v10 out, we are looking to refocus some resources towards a UI overhaul. Our priority in this is to make sure our interface is intuitive and as easy to use as possible. In addition, we are beginning to work on some additional mobile functionality. We realize how important this is in today’s world, and how beneficial the ability to remotely keep an eye on one’s environment could truly be. Thank you for taking the time to review SQL Sentry and providing some great information on how we can continue to make our products better.
