Overall Satisfaction with Stripe
We use Stripe as our primary payment processor for multiple products and services that we offer. We also offer our customers the ability to connect their Stripe accounts in order to process payments with our SaaS products. Stripe helps us provide payment solutions to our customers, and provides payment solutions for our business as well.
Pros
- Better development resources and support than other payment processors.
- No PCI compliance headaches, or frustrating technical workarounds required to process payments.
- Very developer friendly, and a service that our development team enjoys working with, which is rare in the payment processing industry.
Cons
- No automatic tax support. This is the biggest one for us. For customers that need to process complex tax situations like collection VAT or GST, Stripe allows you to create tax rates, but your software team must build out the software to support proper collection. I hope Stripe provides built-in support for taxes better in the future.
- Processing rates are slightly higher than some more legacy payment gateway/merchant account solutions, but we believe this is worth it for the level of service Stripe provides.
- As payment worldwide requirements are complex and differ from use case to use case, while the documentation and support is great, sometimes support is needed in order to understand the areas of the API that will be necessary for a specific use case.
- Faster product feature development.
- More confidently provide new payment options to end users.
- Insights into customer payment data without requiring a separate custom dashboard service or setup.
PayPal's support during issues has been abysmal in our experience to say the least. Our software team has reported bugs to PayPal's team, and these bugs were either ignored after years of multiple reports and in some cases simply deleted without response.
If PayPal were not still a primary choice of a percentage of our customers, we would not use them at all. The lack of confidence we have working with them is the complete opposite experience that we have with Stripe.
We've also worked with Authorize.Net before Stripe existed as a service. In the past 10 years, Authorize.Net has not really improved its service, and Stripe while generally more expensive, is miles ahead in what it provides both developers and merchants as I mentioned earlier.
