We use UniFi Cloud Gateways to secure customers network and protect from intrusion and threats from the Internet. Also it is a great addition for end users remote access via VPN services and site to site VPN that we use often to provide seamless connectivity between sites and branches of the organization.

WatchGuard Firebox Cloud, WatchGuard XTM - Discontinued Product, SonicWall TZ and Fortinet FortiGate

Ultimately the cloud access from anywhere, responsive mobile app, and integration into UniFi ecosystem win over the competitors.

UniFi Cloud Gateways are appropriate for small to mid size organizations that are open for scalability and require network protection and management. It ties in quite neatly into the existing UniFi ecosystem and allows for cloud management of your whole network. It is a bit less appropriate for organizations that do not use any UniFi network devices on their network.
